So I'm a newbie with electric instruments I have an amp, will I need anything special to hook this up?

Yes Boss is better, but this is a good pedal for beginners. Two cables required, I use 6 feet from guitar to pedal (imput) and 12, or 18 to amp, (out). Any battery works depending how much you play. I buy cheap dollar general batteries and they save me im the long run. Your choice. 🎸

Can I use two amps at the same time with this or is the dir output only for a mixer?

Yes. This works to connect two amps. It will split the wet and dry signal if you use both outputs (using just OUT blends the wet and dry signal) - have a look at the manual.
