Review: Simply the best compost bin - I didn’t expect to get this excited about a compost bin, but here we are. This new setup has honestly made composting feel easy instead of like a chore. The bin itself is sturdy and well-ventilated, which I love because it keeps everything from getting too soggy or smelly. You can tell it’s designed to actually work with the natural breakdown process instead of fighting it. Turning and adding material is simple, and it holds a surprisingly large amount without looking bulky or out of place. What really stands out is how clean and organized everything feels now. No more random piles or makeshift solutions—this looks intentional and functional at the same time. It fits neatly into the garden space and actually makes the whole area look more put together. I also appreciate how quickly it seems to be breaking things down already. With a good mix of greens and browns, it’s doing exactly what it should, and I can tell I’ll have usable compost sooner than expected. Overall, this bin turned composting from “something I should do” into something I genuinely enjoy keeping up with. If you’re on the fence about getting one—do it. It’s one of those upgrades that just makes your whole gardening routine better. I added metal poles to keep the bin in shape, you can also use scrap wood or any metal stakes you have to secure it.
Review: Great bin for the money - This bin is a great value. It's simple, cheap, and it works. Frankly, it does not make much sense to spend over a hundred dollars for a bin, which is what most cost. The best alternative to this is to make a bin yourself out of wire fencing or hardware cloth, which I have heard works great and I almost did that myself before settling on this. This is more convenient and more attractive, which matters if (like me) you don't have any place on your property to put it out of sight. It's also only barely more expensive than the DIY version. BUT -- this particular version, from this seller (My Green Gloves Dot Com) does NOT come with the stakes that are included in the slightly more expensive version offered by multiple sellers (including desertcart itself). If you want the stakes (and I would suggest that you do), go pay a few more bucks for the other one here: Presto Products GKL0951-6 Geobin Composting System Yes, you can go buy stakes are your local hardware or garden store, but you'll spend more than the difference between these two versions. UPDATE Jan 2013: It appears that the none of the Geobins ship with stakes anymore, though some folks may be selling old stock that still comes with stakes. But there's no guarantee that you'll get stakes if you buy via the link above. Anyway, it turns out that the stakes are not all that important -- I've found that once you get the thing nice and full, it stays put pretty well on its own. Now that my first one is full, I am going to be ordering a second one. UPDATE Feb 2014: Having owned two of these bins for over a year now, in continuous use, I can add to my original review the fact that they are really quite durable. I'd had some concerns initially, but they hold up pretty well. The plastic does get strained/stretched where you fasten it together, but it doesn't tear. Whenever I turn my compost, I unwrap it and reassemble it upside down and inside out relative to how it just was. This keeps the plastic from getting stretched in the same places all the time and keeps everything in shape. I don't know if they'll last forever, but at least another couple of years, if not more. Speaking of turning, don't waste your time with those plunge-type compost turners -- they don't really do much. If you want to turn your compost, get an ensilage fork (aka "pitchfork"), unwrap the Geobin from the pile (if your compost is sufficiently moist, it will hold its shape well enough even unwrapped), set it up right next to the pile, and fork the pile into the bin in its new location. A fork works much, much better than a shovel for this job. This is great exercise! It only needs to be done a few times for each batch of compost, until it no longer heats up after turning.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can you buy two of these and use them to construct one uber large bin?**
A: You can, absolutely. Would I? Probably not. If you have a good bunch of initial compostable material I would think you could sturdy up the perimeter of the 2x unit. The material is kind of like a stiff, thinner bathtub mat with lots of air holes. So it's pretty pliable and might drive you nuts trying to keep it standing up if you don't have enough waste to start. That illustration probably has the bin reduced to about 1/2 to 2/3 the max diameter. I use it almost fully expanded.Hope this is helpful!

**Q: Can I overlap it around a wire mesh composter?**
A: You can, tho there's really no need to. The bin comes with five interlocking plastic "keys" that keep the bin shut pretty tightly. I've used my bins for about two and a half years now and they have stood up to all the wear I could put them to... Mainly putting it up, filling it up to the brim, and taking it down to move it on many multiples of occasions. In fact, I found that the method of using this composter most efficiently is using it to contain all of your materials in by filling it, (preferably by green and brown layer mixing), letting it sit for a day, and then taking it down and setting it back up next to the first stack to refill again. Using it this way, you could potentially have a number of mounds all working sequentially in a row composting, and when one is ready to turn, just use the bin set up next to the oldest to turn the pile into and repeat. These bins are very hardy, I have gotten a lot of use out of mine without the need for any wire mesh just using those keys to keep the screen closed. One thing that may be valuable to you, depending on how fast you can fill it, are little wire stakes to hold it into the ground, though I've never had any issue with it wanting to fall over at all unless there are heavy winds, or if you don't have enough starting material to form as a nice base to hold the circle in place as you fill it. Usually about a foot or two will be fine to keep it up as you fill it progressively, though it's really meant to be used for massive amounts of materials to fill it, as the process of composting works best when the pile is greater than three feet tall. If you do not have much starting material, you could potentially decrease the diameter of the bin to as small as you choose to, as the composter material can be overlapped and still locked together to a pretty small circle if need be.

**Q: Will extreme heat break down the plastic? I live in Arizona and plastic things do not thrive well for very long outdoors.**
A: We live in North Carolina and had a very hot summer last year...record amount of 100+ days. We have only had the bins for a year and have seen no breakdown. The only thing that had happened was in a bad storm we had a 12in tree fall on one of the bins and all it did was tear the top about 2in between holes. We are very pleased with how they are and for the price you can't beat them...Hope this helps

**Q: Is the geobin made in the usa?**
A: Daniel, the Geobin is made by our employees in Weyauwega, WI of materials sourced exclusively in the USA. Thank you for your question and consideration of our Geobin composter.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Adjustable - Economical - Portable - Well Made
*by P***E on September 19, 2014*

I've had it for a year now and I can say I really like this bin. It's adjustable in size to darn MASSIVE (about 2 fifty gallon drum size) to smaller if you want. I have it set at it's largest size and with all of my household and gardening scraps (I'm a vegan), it's barely 3/4 full and I put lots in it. It's very easy to put together, the "keys" are simple yet well made. The entire bin is a nice sturdy material and should last a long time. I also like all of the aeration holes throughout, there are plenty and I notice material break down pretty quickly and the color black also brings the heat with it. I don't aerate it (from the top) hardly ever and it's still doing very well. I can scrape just below the surface, and see the "black gold" composted materials. DO KEEP IN MIND it is open and the critters have a hayday in this thing. I find avocado seeds, mango seeds, corn cobs spread all over the place sometimes. However, I don't mind them too much as its free food for them. However, I am located in a urban neighborhood and sometimes seeing my coconut shell in the front yard is pretty funny! The only con that I have is when it is set to its largest size, and NOT full, the top sides sag inward. So you may want to think about how much you will be dumping in and how often you will use it. I will be emptying it spring 2015 to spread in the garden and will update this review then.
