A vivid, insightful account
As a professor of the professions, I was impressed by the authoritative account in the 3rd edition of The D.O.s that takes us from the origins in "magnetic healing" to osteopathic medicine as a full-service partner of scientific medicine. Gevitz writes with clarity and insight about the challenges facing the profession today as osteopathic schools integrate more fully with allopathic schools. Might they lose their distinctiveness that has justified large public grants in them? As Gevitz writes, "the profession must create a clearer vision of its role and develop a recognizable public identity." That identity centers on a wholistic approach to mobilizing a body's healing capacities in body and spirit. This is what millions seek in professional partners to help them heal from acute and chronic disorders.
