Q: What will gauge show for less then 1/8th tire tread

So to answer the question, 1/8" would read "4" on the gauge or 4/32. This tire would be legal. BTW, new tires have about 12/32" tread.

Q: I just got mine. It doesn't perfectly zero out when placed on something flat. Anyone else have same problem?

Mine is very close to zeroing out, but not perfect. For me this isn't a big deal. It was purchased for just a home environment and not for racing or commercial use.

Q: What does each number mean in measuring tire depth

Each number represents 1/32 of an inch. For example if the needle is on 6, the tread depth would be 6/32.

Q: When using this product, should it be placed horizontally or perpendicular in the tire tread?

The dial shoukd be perpendicular against the tire tread. There's a pin that goes into the tread.
