Typhoon and Tempest Aces of World War 2 (Osprey Aircraft of the Aces No 27)

By the time they were heard, they had passed their targets.
Two late comers to the RAF, the Typhoon had many problems in service early. It became a deadly low-level fighter-bomber, I think it was the RAF equivalent of the fighter-bomber P-47 of the USAAF. Between the two, German tanks, vehicles, and troop convoys were given no rest from the Allied air forces in the European combat theater.

Nice photo's, not story's!
Osprey books are great photo albums but they aren't the story telling kind of book I was expecting. That was my mistake. They do have a small amount of storie relating to each pilot but very short in nature. If your looking for storie's about missions throughout a pilot's tour or the war these are probably not what your looking for. They tend to follow an aircraft's war career instead of the pilots. But again nice photo's.

Very enjoyable
Excellent! Plenty of info on the pilots and planes, situations they encountered, and war records. One Wing Co. had 2 Tempests at his private mounts! Even detailed scale plans are included.{1/72nd} Very happy I purchased this.

Typhoon and Tempest Aces
It's common practice to pack these planes together - Typhoon and Tempest at War, Typhoon and Tempest in Action, - and so now the exploits of the Typhoon and Tempest Aces. And they are listed all, including Mr. Pierre Closterman with just 11 kills, as the other reviewer already noticed. Makes you long for "French Aces", doesn't it? But Mr. Closterman does get mentioned on pages 69 and 70, and you get a photograph of him and his plane as well. What I especially liked, apart from the pilot stories, was the the last part of the book with the bibliography on page 96, the explanation that goes with the forty superb colour plates and the scale drawings of the various Typhoon versions - the Typhoon was well known for the teething problems in the first versions which gets a nice coverage - culminating into the beautifull sleek Tempest.

Typhoon and Tempest Aces of WW2
I am a great fan of Osprey publications and this one is no exception. It covered an area of aviation history that I was not familiar with. The mix of personal experiences, colour plates and period photos made this a great ref book for anyone interested in WW2 history or just the curious like myself, highly recommended.

British Beasts!
Great account of the two 'British Beasts' and their fab pilots who generally had the better of German planes during the mid and later war years.

Very interesting and informative.
I bought this book to help me trace the final location and moments of my namesake. This book not only helped me to take me a big step nearer to my personal goal but also taught me a great deal about the men and the aircraft, recomended reading.
