Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor Paint Set, 12 Half Pan Field Pocket Set

This is the best plein air watercolor kit I have found! For a watercolor hobbyist like me, I don’t need big pans of each color so the quarter pans (I think) are more than enough for me. The pigments are good quality and deep, I think the selection of colors are good as well. Plus, I like that the pans can be removed if I wanted to take some of my other watercolor paints along. I don’t love the little brush that comes with it only because I can’t get the handle to stay in the cap well and it’s fallen out on me as I am painting, messing up my work. But the brush itself is good for detailed work. I still have to carry another brush or two for covering more space. The best part is the little water holder and that there’s a part that can be used for cleaning your brushes between colors! All in all, it’s a very compact and versatile little kit!

The palette arrived quickly and was in perfect condition, everything sealed, so there were no worries of it being a used item (happened sometimes when ordering). The product is AMAZING! How they came up with this palette that's less than the size of my hand is astounding, and it has 2 mixing trays, a water flask, brush, container to put water, room for 12 half pans, and a tiny sponge! Even the paint pan section has a way of loading the half pans so that they don't rattle around. I bought this for the palette and not the paint as I have professional level paint to put in it, but I tried out the Cotman paint and was really impressed. I've heard from art forums that the Cotman paints perform closer to professional than student and now that I've tried them, I agree. This is a high end palette in both design and paint quality. I would 100% recommended this to anyone on the fence about spending $ on watercolor paint. The colors are bright and easy to use with a brush full of water. About a week after I received the product the seller messaged, making sure that I'd received the palette. I thought that was really nice$

Perfect as always. Winsor & Newton rarely fails to deliver and with this mini watercolor field kit they go above and beyond. The color set gives you a wide range of options and the fact that the paints are interchangeable not only allows you to organize the colors in any way you want but you but you can purchase you own colors and replace them as you see fit. The brush is a nice size and does the job (I do bring my own brushes though) but I didnt really buy this for the brush, however the fact that the brush is collapsible and has a cover is a nice plus. The kit has three mixing pans which is amazing considering how small the kit it - everything has a function in this kit there is no wasted space. It holds a decent amount of water in the little jug and the cup that holds the water is sturdy when attached to the side of your kit. The sponge is a nice little bonus and just shows how much attention to detail W&N pays attention to their products. You also have an awesome little ring on the back of you kit so that you can hold you palette in your hand if you find cant set it down somewhere. It also clips well to a sketch book with a large binder kit but you will lose a lot of one mixing pan when doing that. Love this kit so very much! Thank you Winsor & Newton! If you are looking at this versus the Winsor & Newton Cotman Water Colour Compact Set and/or the Cotman Plus Kit I have to say hands down go with this kit I also own both Cotman sets and ended up taking out the paint pods and putting them into an Altoids tin and making my own field kit. It just didnt do it for me (But I digress as this isnt a review of the Cotman)... This one addresses all of the issues I had with the Cotman and the Cotman Field Plus Kit. This one is worth the cost.

The colors were vibrant and the kit is so so convenient. It doesn't have an odd smell like most do and they blend fairly well on decent paper. They're pretty and smooth. Pretty nice for the price! My only complaint is that it arrived kind of broken, it's missing one of the screws that holds it all together which makes it kind of inconvenient to hold. Its nothing serious and easy to manage but it is whh it's 4 stars and not 5

Love this product, still use it. I recommend it to others. It’s great travel size, pigments are pretty good. They are student grade may be a little better. Perfect for travel or Plein air. Good color selections, little palette for mixing.

I am happily surprised at this compact travel paint set. It has everything you need to paint - 12 great colors , areas to mix colors, a water bottle for carrying water, a cup to hold the water, a paint brush and a small sponge to use in place of a paper towel. I made my own color Sample card to fit in the travel set. It all folds up nicely for travel - approx. 2.5 in. x 5in. x 1.25 inches for sizing. The paints are very nice and cover and mix nicely. I highly recommend this field set!!

I own a lot of watercolor palettes, but when painting in plein air, particularly if I don’t have a table and am sitting in a camp chair on the ground, this one - with its side-mounted water cup - remains one of the most versatile and useful. I’ve had one for four years and the only issue I’ve had is that the leash on the water flask lid broke. For the price, you can reasonably justify swapping out the default paint pans for a better quality of paint, which is what I did several years ago with the help of some empty half pans. And if you’re just starting out, this is a great starter set for the price. I think Cotman paints are perfectly reasonable to learn on.

I was excited when W&N offered this portable kit with the Cotman paint in it, at a very reasonable price. The kit previously had only been available with their Artist Grade pan watercolors, at a much higher price. It’s a very nice travel set. The plastic parts are well-made and the paint is ok, if you wet it first to activate. It’s nice to have a portable set with non-sticky or non-honey type paint. Much less messy. The design is fun, partly just because it’s so intriguing how the “box” comes apart to function, and then the many little parts neatly snap together once again to be a sleekly small, classy, portable art machine! It’s functional and cute. Leaks are better controlled than in simpler travel box designs. The organic sponge unfortunately was so fragile out it partly crumbled away, and the supplied brush is so stiff and tiny that I use another larger and softer portable brush. The Cotman paints in this set give me the impression of being less pigmented than a previous Cotman travel set I’ve used, purchased about ten years ago, when the Cotman paints were made in the UK. Or maybe I’m imagining it… But it’s really cool how they all fit in the classy little box! Haha! Happy travels.

Absolutely delighted with this field box from Winsor and Newton. Good quality, well designed, sturdy plastic and carefully thought out for the needs of the plein air painter. Highly recommended and I wouldn't hesitate to buy again.

Very good product

I love this little travel set. I have an old vintage set from years ago that doesn't have the extra pot and mixing pallets this one has so I always had to carry extra pots. This one so much better as it's got it all in one and folds up neatly and compact so great for space saving The paint is the usual good student quality from winsor newton and contains the main colours selection used. They give a good background wash with easy to apply to good quality paper. They adhere well and are Perfect for students and beginners. I Also use their professional grade paints as well This particular set was very good value
