Ants must have water, and they also forage, so if the bait is up near the base of the exterior wall, they will find it. It takes only one ant to come across the bait to alert all the other ants to come and then take it back to feed the whole colony, which then solves your ant problem.

I have 2 dogs and never had an issue. But if you think your dog may be inclined to eat it then i would avoid putting it within their reach. In my experience the pellets last for several days
