Does this fit a standard Ethernet cable or is it the smaller phone line (same shape) cable?

It fits a normal Ethernet cable, but in my experience it’s the smallest one. There is one larger (can’t remember the number).

Does this fit the old BT sockets as i gather they changed about 20 years ago but mine is older?

I am not sure. I bought a cheep phone and that adapter. The phone does not work. Not sure if its the phone or the adapter. BT is normally quality guaranteed. The house phone really a novelty so I needed chased it up. Not sure if this is of help to you.
