Yes, it's a real transformer
I bought this specifically to run a 120V tungsten grinder off the same 240V power as my arc welder. The grinder is rated at 1 amp, so the power ratings are perfect. Since this is an actual step-down transformer, I see no problems for my application. It weighs about 1.5 lbs so this might not be so great if you're using it for travel and packing ultra-light but it does its job very well. Amazon's review asked for a "drying power" rating which is grossly inappropriate for this 200W unit. It will run your small appliances fine but NOT a 2KW blow dryer! Silly Amazon...

It worked well with curling iron
Took it to Pakistan where it's 230volts. It worked well while using flatteners & curlers, however using it with a hair dryer made it over heat every time after a few minutes of use. But not with curlers & flatteners. So we would stop using and let it rest and start again. So overall it did do its job as described in product description.

Voltage converter
The media could not be loaded. Used for travel, easy to use and do not take a lot of space in the bag.REMEMBER you need to check your watts on your electric technology and multiple by 3 to use it. Example hairdryer usually take 1800 watts multiple by 3 = 5400 watts, so for hairdryer you need get around 6000 watts Voltage Converter.Edited:Using in Russia for almost 3 years to charge Dyson V8 Animal Extra cordless vacuum cleaner, for small coffee grinder every morning and other devices. No problem.

Worked for a bit then stated to smell like burnt wires
I purchased the step down transformer before my trip to Curaçao (where the power plugs and sockets are type F and standard voltage is 127 / 220 V and standard frequency is 50 Hz) in order to use appliances from the US. On the first use we were using a hairdryer for less than 2 minutes and the transformer started to smell like burnt wires and stopped working. The next day I tried it again and it worked again but now I'm afraid it might be a fire hazard.
