Nice for amateur work around the house for sound deadening
Wanted to check decibel ranges for various things in the house for noise cancellation. It's kind of incredible just how much sound is in a quiet room due to ambient noise. I'll see how it does once I get a chance to see how much sound deadening I need, but I think this will work for my needs.

Helps kids understand how noisy the are
I bought this to help my kid control their volume. I tested their volume and then matched it to let them hear how it sounded. Also measured volume in the next room to help them understand how they were impacting family members especially if they were trying to sleep. Auto off is great because the kids use it themselves now and it saves battery. Also easy to use. And not to big for smaller hands.

Know what you're buying
First, there is a battery compartment. Remove the orange casing. Put your fingernail in one of the corners and peel it off. When you have the totally black meter out of the orange case, the battery compartment is on the back.Every meter must be calibrated. The instructions on how to calibrate this meter aren't written for a first-time user. And they instruct you to use a tool and equipment that are not included with this meter. The tool you need is a small screwdriver, like the kind you use for a watch or glasses. The equipment you need is called a “94 dB@1KHz standard sound source” in the instructions. What’s that? An acoustic calibrator. Do a search for acoustic calibrators and they’re all more than 5x the cost of this meter.Once you can get it calibrated, the meter is easy to use.My opinion is if you want a sound meter to conduct a study, collect data, or to use as evidence (like in a complaint about a noisy neighbor), you would be better served to get a higher quality meter. This is a simple, low cost sound meter that can offer general comparisons of sound levels. There are decibel meter apps, but none is considered particularly accurate because they’re all limited by variances among different phones. This meter is a step above those apps.

Wrong meter for application?
Ambient room was 33. I stepped outside to record the AC units. 60…. Not saying that’s wrong because my machine is quiet. I can barely hear it indoors. Then the neighbor’s pool heater pump kicked on and that thing you can hear everywhere. This meter says it’s around 70. There’s no way that’s a mere 70…. One of the other reviewers said this is an A… for stereos and boom boxes you need a C. Guess I’ll try to find one of those.
