It’s coal, it burns and produces a good heat. Leaves a lot of ash, but all the reduced smoke and safe to burn ones do, so not bothered by that.Comes dry and each bag is sealed in a cardboard box, which is nice, so not split or soaking wet, as some are that you buy from stores.As the winter season comes to an end, it’s getting harder to find outlets that still sell it in my area, so great that you can buy it through Amazon.I would recommend.

Should have listened to the previous reviews. The bags come fully sealed and each bag in a cardboard box, looked fine. Today I opened a bag to fill my coal scuttle and the coal is soaking wet and useless. Not just damp but soaked through like they were stored in water and then bagged up for sale. No wonder they are cheap they are counting on you not returning 3 heavy bags. False economy.. do not buyUpdate.. Contacted seller through amazon and they arranged a replacement three bags of dry coal to be delivered. Thank you

Have been purchasing these for a couple of years for my fire pit, I find them easier to start than wood. A bag gives off more than enough heat to sit outside into the late evening and is still going when we decide to turn in for the night. Delivered in boxes and can't say I've ever had any problems. Would recommend for anyone looking to use in a fire pit outside.
