It has a basket to capture the tip and a spot for the pencil to snap on. There is a hole designed to accept the Aqua Tether. A slot and larger hole provide various means to attach the slate to your gear.

I really like the pencil.Pencil attaches to slate but usually come off when diving. I use a thin bungee to secure pencil to slate.Slate is smaller than most which makes it compact (good) but also limits what you can write. A choice of slate sizes would be good.
