A very good cost effective large capacity external mechanical hard drive good for most gamers.
It has a decent capacity of about 7.5Tb and not the full 8Tb advertised(as a lot of space is used up for the file system on mechanical hard drives in general so you very rarely get the full capacity advertised) for the price and works very well with the PS4 PRO and on the whole has decent access speeds tho on occasion it does seem to be a bit slow. This is probably to do with the 10 second spin up time which does make loading a little slow at times during gaming. Tho game loading is fairly quick when you load up a game from the Home Screen. The drive does run quite warm during busy times when gaming so I would recommend that the drive is placed in a well ventilated place so as to allow heat to naturally dissipate and definitely ensure that the fan at the back of the drive has a clear path to expel the build up of heat. The drive is extremely easy to set up and is formatted for the PS4 very quickly. It is definitely worth the money tho it will run considerably slower than a solid state hard Drives as will all mechanical drives so there is a trade off between storage space and read, write, access times. Also if you choose a solid state hard drive you are currently limited to 2Tb and will very likely pay £200 or more and the faster the drive the more expensive they are generally. Also to really get the benefit of the speed of solid state hard drives you would need to replace the PS4 internal drive with a solid state hard Drive and then you have the problem of downloading the PS4 operating system on to the drive prior to or during replacement which can be very problematic. Hence why mechanical External hard Drives are very popular with the PS4 as generally the storage space of the internal hard drive is much smaller than required for most gamers, so external hard Drives are a almost a must have item as it allows you to have comprehensive access to many years of games overtime and not be forced into deleting and installing games which is very time consuming. Also the hard drives is not fully silent and you can hear it running faintly in the background especially during times when you are not gaming which is probably the downside of having a hard drive which spins faster than standard mechanical hard drives tho I think it is a trade off which is worth it in my opinion.

A little loud, but performing well and looks awesome
I got this drive for storing and editing photos, as well as storing video files. Its working great and is so much faster than my old 5200rpm drive. This apparently houses an data center level HDD, so it should hopefully be more durable than the desktop level HDDs that come in cheaper external drives. It looks really cool with the rugged enclosure design and features two USB sockets that would be very handy to have on the desk. Unfortunately its a little too loud for me to have on my desk. There is a fan inside to provide active cooling, which is great to have for durability of the drive, but it is quite loud. As well as the fan, the drive itself is fairly noisy being 7200rpm. I have put the drive inside a cupboard, with a mini USB room fan plugged into the USB socket on the enclosure. Very handy to have them! The drive runs a little hot at around 56c according to crystal disc info. I searched it and apparently its normal for this type of drive to run a little hot, so I don't think its an issue with the enclosure or the drive. Setup was easy and just a case of plugging in the USB and power cable and turning it on. Windows immediately detected the drive and it was ready to go. Overall I am very pleased with this external HDD and would definitely recommend if you're looking for a fast external drive.

They don't work with Asus X570 Boards - Asus problem not WD
I stuck one of these (I actually ordered two and an 8TB Drive for backup) in my ROG Crosshair VIII Formula board and in a fit of desire for more new toys ordered one the next day for my ROG Crosshair VIII Hero too as you can't buy just the one for children as it just upsets the other. In this case both were upset as it simply didn't work due to the on-going issues with the Asus BIOSs in their X570 boards. How do I know you ask? Well, I stuck it in my MSI Edge X570 and it worked fine but slower as I only have the X4 slot free. It did not work in the Asus's X4 slot incase you were wondering. If you are going to buy an x570 board then pay yer money and get the Godlike or the bang for the buck Tomahawk. Asus really do need to get their finger out with the BIOS - the only thing saving them is the fact the Godlike is so expensive. MSI - drop the price by £200 and you'll sell loads of 'em.

Hidden gem inside
SO I bought this and I dont own an xbox. Heres why. Inside the 12tb D10 is a Western Digital DC HC520 drive. I quick google of said drive will reveal this is an enterprise grade drive. Coupled with it being on offer for two hundred notes means that when on offer this is a bargain. I stripped the drive out and gave my nas a handy boost. Bit about it as an external drive. The case is plastic fantastic which is disappointing at this price point. Its chunky though and has a small fan. I'll likely reuse the case with an old drive. Either way the drive that came with it is a beast. Very fast with a low margin of error and built to last. The drives literally run all day every day in data centres so will be more than enough for your games collection. The real limit here on performance is the USB interface. Again perfect for games or as an external drive but a true sata connection sets it free.

Great for PS5 External Storage !!!!!!
I was using a 2TB drive for my PS5 external storage which I had originally been using with my laptop, but with the size of games it quickly filled up, so if I wanted to play a new game I had to delete one and download the game I wish to play which could take several hours. I have now downloaded all my PS5 and PS4 games onto this drive and moved a couple from internal storage over to this drive which frees up space on my internal storage. To play PS5 games stored on this drive you do have to move them to internal storage which only takes a few minutes compared to several hours it would take to download them, PS4 games can be played directly from this hard drive which I do and they play great with no issues. If your after external storage for your PS5 this does the trick, as this is the 8TB model the drive spins at 7200 rpm, but 5TB or less drive spins at 5500rpm which will give slower transfer speeds but will still be ok.

Failed after less than 3 months
So, I own a LOT of storage devices (HDDs, SSDs, Flash memory devices of all kinds). No, really... I own a LOT of storage devices (over 0.25PB... yes... PETABYTES... in total) So, when I bought this WD Black 8TB drive to use as a primary "Working Drive" for my video editing work, I was expecting much of what was advertised. I was expecting the drive to be high-performance (it woefully isn't, even on a Thunderbolt 3 to USB 3 connection). I was expecting the drive to be MODERN (i.e.... quiet)... it is not! This thing is louder than my vacuum cleaner (no, I'm not exaggerating... it clicks and clunks all the time, even when not being actively used, and you can literally hear it when vacuuming the office!) It takes FOREVER to spin up! Seriously... I turn the power on, then walk into the kitchen to make myself a coffee... because it takes so long to spin up, I might as well! But now we get the worst part... the most indefensible part of this thing: it is less reliable than a plumber's estimate! After less than 3 months of use (and I take immense care of my devices, it must be stressed) the disk has failed. I edit on a Mac (Final Cut Pro X) and when I plug the drive in and switch it on, MacOS reports that the drive failed, it cannot be repaired, and gives me read-only, time-limited access solely to back up what data HASN'T been corrupted. In technical terms, the disk has reached its Sector Reallocation Limit. This means that so much of the physical disk is damaged inside, that it has had to relocate those bits of data onto other sectors... and has now run out entirely of sectors onto which it can reallocate. Fortunately for me, and unlike Windows, MacOS detects this, and blocks all attempts to modify data on the disk so that I can safely recover whatever data remains (not missing any of its pieces on dead sectors). But wait, it gets worse! In December, I moved from the UK to the Czech Republic (a "Brexit Refugee" of sorts) and now cannot send this drive back to Amazon without incurring Import Duty, Taxes, and exorbitant fees. Indeed, so much would it cost to return this lump of electronic waste that it fiscally isn't even worth it to me. Alas, it is to be consigned to the Electronics Recycling Bins that are common-place in the Czech Republic. Perhaps some of its pieces will begin a new life as something more useful... like a wall against which I can bang my head! Dear reader... do yourself a favour: don't buy Western Digital! Spend the extra money... buy something from a RELIABLE manufacturer, because WD have failed me entirely too many times. Also, in the UK, most WD drives come from a recycling facility in Northern Ireland... so you're buying drives that ALREADY failed. Just keep that in mind. Go Seagate. Go Samsung.... hell, go HGST if you must! Just don't put your trust in Western Digital! It's like trusting your money to the bankers: doomed to end in disappointment for you.

it is far above expectations
it is much smaller and more portable than a NAS and the speed of reading and writing is acceptable

Fast transfer speeds, but very slow to access
The transfer speeds are upwards of 200 MB/s but when trying to access the drive it almost always takes 15-30 seconds for it to "wake up". It's very frustrating having windows explorer, the torrent software etc. freeze for such a long time until you can access the drive. For me it was a deal breaker and I returned the disk, but if you don't mind the long access times I think you'll be very happy with this HDD.
