The kit includes three spray cans. One has a cleaner, the second is a red dyed penetrant and the last when sprayed dries to a fine white powder. The white powder absorbs the red dye and highlights cracks or discontinuities in the surface.

Does this require a black light to see cracks?

No, the dye is bright red so any normal lighting is fine.
