Gerber Gear Strongarm - Fixed Blade Tactical Knife for Survival Gear - Coyote Brown, Plain Edge

I've had this knife for nearly 2 years now and it remains one of my favorites in a collection of over 350 knives. Why? It does it's job skillfully and without complaint day in and day out! Made in USA of outstanding materials it is one of the knives I am truly proud to own. Fit and finish are outstanding. This knife is a tank too. You'd have to do something pretty crazy to bend or break this knife. The handle is one of my favorites ever. The handle of a knife should be able to be FIRMLY gripped even if your hands are wet or greasy. The Gerber StrongArm knives meet this requirement easily. For an everyday usage knife properly tempered 420HC is one of my preferred alloys. Yes it's old and not a "super steel" but 420HC is not surpassed in toughness by any stainless alloy used in knives. It is also highly corrosion resistant so doesn't need special care. This model is coated making it even more corrosion resistant. 420HC is, perhaps best of all, very easy to sharpen to a satisfyingly razor sharp edge. No matter how hard a steel is it's going to get dull at some point. Might as well get something you can sharpen easily. Gerber and Buck 420HC knives will consistently have a hardness of 58HRC thanks to a proprietary process. This results in better edge retention than typical 420HC knives. The StrongArm sheath is really nifty too. It's very versatile and can be attached to you or your gear easily. I love how low profile this sheath is when MOLLE mounted. When using my favorite pack I like MOLLE mounting a StrongArm to the shoulder strap upside down. How handy is that!! With the way the knife is retained by this sheath I am not worried at all about the knife falling out. Only the Glock sheaths compare when it comes to plastic sheaths. If for some reason I had to give up my 350+ knives and only keep one, this knife would certainly be one I would consider and that's saying something. If you want a trustworthy companion that won't ever let you down, won't break the bank, and is proudly USA made I think you'd be hard pressed to find something better. Grumpy old guy seal of approval!! Just FYI: I accidentally (DUH) broke this sheath, but not during normal use and totally my fault. I asked Gerber if I could buy a new one and they ignored my request and just sent me a free replacement. How nice is that?!

The Magnacut Strongarm stands out as a thoughtfully engineered tool that feels rugged, precise, and purpose-built. It occupies an ideal middle ground—substantial enough for demanding tasks without being cumbersome—making it a reliable choice for both daily use and emergency preparedness. There’s little justification for paying several times more for a premium-brand blade that you’d hesitate to actually use. This knife feels ready for real work and built to endure years of hard service. As someone who normally relies on folding knives (EDC) throughout the day, I decided to compare this directly against a visually similar budget imitation. The difference was immediate and dramatic. The Strongarm features a thick, robust blade with quality steel, a durable protective coating, a comfortable textured grip, and a solid, well-designed sheath. The copy, by contrast, was noticeably thinner, poorly constructed, and paired with inferior materials. Despite appearances, they are worlds apart—this knife earns its price by delivering true performance. Out of the box, the edge was cleanly ground and extremely sharp. The handle scales provide excellent traction, grip and comfort, while the overall balance allows for extended carry without fatigue. The spine on my unit is rounded, which limits ferro rod use, but that’s a minor tradeoff given how versatile the knife is overall. It’s not intended as a dedicated bushcraft blade, but it performs confidently across a wide range of tasks. The sheath deserves special mention. It holds the knife securely without making re-sheathing awkward and offers multiple carry options, including scout and vertical configurations. The snap retention adds peace of mind while still allowing quick access when needed. In use, the knife has handled everything from splitting kindling to food preparation with ease. The edge geometry and balance inspire confidence, and the blade behaves predictably in the hand. While some may dislike the partially serrated edge, it suits my needs perfectly. Construction quality is excellent, and when you’re far from help and depending on your gear, that matters. Steel choice will always be debated, but corrosion resistance is a priority in wet environments. For damp climates, the steel used here strikes a sensible balance between durability, ease of maintenance, and rust resistance. Overall, this is an exceptionally capable, well-built knife that delivers function over flash. If you want a dependable tool you won’t hesitate to use hard, this one is difficult to beat.

I'm a knife guy and needed another blade like I needed a hole in the head, but despite this I ended up making the purchase anyway (coyote brown/fine edge) because, unlike my other knives, this one seemed to have EVERY feature I'd ever want in a go-to fixed blade. It's a full tang with a glass breaking pommel that's made in USA. The grip has the room needed for large hands and the texture needed to stay glued to the hand even when wet or the user's hand is weak and fatigued. The .190" thick sabre grind/clip point blade is robust all the way to the tip so it has strength without the weight penalty of a quarter inch thick blade. The spine is 90° for striking ferro rods right out of the box and needs no modifying with a file. It is in the easily manageable 5" class length (4.8"), which strikes the right balance for survival/utility without being unwieldy like my full size 7" Kabar. The ambidextrous sheath has mounting options for miles: belt mount, drop-leg belt mount, molle mount, inverted molle mount (it's a very secure sheath) and finally, scout style. It also comes in a coyote brown option which is something I required. To top it all off, the fasteners are snaps! None of that noisy velcro rubbish that will get clogged and fail when wet. They really did their homework on this one, well done Gerber And miracle of miracles! Gerber has suspended their inexplicable and ODD OBSESSION with offering serrated-only edges by actually offering this one in a fine edge. Yes, I was literally shocked to see Gerber actually LISTENING to their potential customers for a change. -Side note on serrated edges: They are a total PITA, and CANNOT be field sharpened without a dedicated tapered diamond rod. Who needs that? This is one of the obvious reasons they are avoided by many like the plague. Yes, serrations are great for starting cuts through fibrous materials like rope and seatbelts, BUT this fine edge actually goes through that stuff like butter AND I can sharpen it with a well chosen rock easily found in the field in two minutes if I ever needed to. Furthermore, I use a somewhat coarse grit sharpener that leaves micro-serrations and don't "polish" my fine edges anyway, so I always avoid serrations as they would add NOTHING in the way of utility for me. BTW, the knife came sharp right out of the box, and I mean RAZOR sharp. Nothing but good to report here. So are there any cons among all these pros? Well, for what you get for only fifty bucks, I'd really be nit-picking, but since this is a review, I'll nit-pick.. -The polymer sheath, as great as it is designed, seems to be made of a rather brittle type of polymer that may not be very forgiving under stress once exposed to extremely cold temps. Only time will tell, but I'd hate to have this thing snap on me at the worst possible moment. - The 420HC steel is considered a low grade stainless and thus a potential "con" for some so that's why I'm listing it. But honestly, if this point has you on the fence, don't worry about it because Gerber has heat treated the steel to really take plenty of abuse in stride. If in doubt, go on YouTube and watch it go through a thing called, "the gauntlet". The gauntlet is basically a bunch of knife guys who, over the course of months, passed around a single Strongarm and documented themselves abusing the hell out of it in rather creative ways.They broke windows and bricks, bashed it through doors, hammered it through copper pipe, cut all kinds of things with it.. including wood. Pried pallets apart, used it like a can opener to cut open the steel lid of a 55 gallon drum, etc,.. When it finally returned to the guy who first put it through its paces, it was 100% intact and functional showing only "character wear", which actually made it look better than it did when it was brand new lol. I kinda laughed when I watched the whole series and afterwards immediately came to Amazon to make the purchase. So take the dive, you won't regret it.

I love to go to the range and outdoors to shoot my guns. I always carry a knife with me and I wanted a new one with a better sheath. This knife has great reviews and the Gerber name and it was the right size that I wanted. I ordered one and I liked it so much that I went back and ordered two more as gifts for my range buddies. This knife is superb. It is only one of two knives that I purchased that out of the box I could shave the hair off of my arm. The blade was honed like a razor. The blade is ceramic coated but it is actually a stainless steel full tang blade. Full tang blades are the only way to go for a strong and high performance knife. It is also a drop point blade. The pommel of the knife has a hard point with a hole through it. The hard point is enough to shatter a car window or windshield in a rescue situation or to be used, if needed, as a striking point in self defense. I will put a small wrist lanyard on the heel of the knife using military Paracord. The knife has a good grip with a diamond texture. The handle is shaped to be comfortable and provide a gripping surface that is non slip. Both ends of the grip are flared to protect your hand. The grip is solidly built and rubber coated. The knife comes with an excellent sheath that allows you to mount the knife in multiple ways. MOLLE mounting, sideways belt mounting and vertical belt mounting are all included. I have shown the accessories in photographs with the review and I hope they are helpful for you. The sheath itself is extremely nice. This makes this knife a great value. The sheath also comes with strong nylon straps for the belt mounting and MOLLE mounting. There is modular horizontal belt mounting hardware supplied and you can also use it for easy MOLLE mounting using the plastic slide locking hardware. The only thing I would have liked would have been to have the sheath come with straps to allow thigh mounting while hanging from your belt a little lower. The sheath allows the knife to snap into the locked mode but also be drawn out easily but it is securely held into place. There is also a nylon strap that you can snap around the knife to hold the knife even more securely. This knife is a nice product. It is solidly built with 420 hardened stainless steel and black coated with ceramic for rust protection and to reduce visibly of a drawn knife. It is one of the two sharpest knives I own out of about 30 collected over the years. After showing it to friends I wound up buying them one as a gift. I recommend this knife as a good product that is a good value and it comes with the accessories that you need. I rated it at 5 stars. This is a great knife to carry when you are in the field.

I bought this knife in 2018 for $51. 5 stars at the time because of the price and quality. The price in 2026 is not worth it unless you have money to blow and don’t kinda RELATIVELY inferior product compared to other knives in the $100 price range. It’s a very good knife, easy to sharpen, comfortable to wear, ergonomic and durable. It is a very low maintenance knife due to the steel so no need to keep it oiled. It does lose the edge faster than carbon steel but again it is easy to sharpen. The sheath is the best commercial sheath I’ve seen for a mass produced knife with multiple ways to carry it. At the time for the price it would have been an excellent knife to keep in a truck or get home bag. At the price it sits today I would rather get a cold steel srk in 3v. For a cheaper price the SRK in Sk5 is a great budget alternative for less than $40 on sale. $100 for a $50 knife in 2026 is crazy work. Forgot to mention how much I love the grip it no slipping whe wet or muddy and loved in like an extension of my hand.

I received this knife as a Father's Day gift, and all I can say is WOW! I normally don't expect very much from Gerber ever since they came out with all the lousy Bear Grylls knives that virtually break if you breath on them too hard! But after watching all of the very positive YouTube reviews on this knife, I decided I would add it to my wish list and see what all the hype was about. I must say, after using this knife for a while, I'm very pleasantly surprised! I think my opinion of Gerber may finally be changing! The knife: This knife is extremely solid in the hand! I would put it up against my ESEE4 and ESEE6 everyday of the week as far as durability goes! The diamond textured rubber overmolded grip is fantastic! Wet or dry, there is no way this knife is slipping out of your hands! The pommel of the knife sports a nice glass-breaker/attitude adjuster, that can be used for a multitude of tasks and is a handy feature to have. The black ceramic blade coating is not overly rough like the Becker and ESEE knives, which is a plus in my book! The blade looks as though it's about 3/16" thick, but Gerber did a very nice job with the saber grind and as a result, this knife cuts like a beast! Despite what some people have said in their YouTube reviews, this knife is PERFECTLY capable of making some beautiful feather sticks (as you can see by my pictures!). The grip shape is very neutral and extremely comfortable in the hand! It easily allows for a multitude of grip options which is awesome! Just a very well thought out grip! Nice job Gerber! The blade is constructed from 420HC stainless steel and holds a great edge! Gerber did an excellent job with the heat treat. The blade also came from the factory with a beautifully, symmetrically ground and very sharp edge! I'm also really happy to see that this knife was made right here in Oregon, USA! The folks over at Gerber did a very nice job finishing and sharpening this knife! The drop point blade does have an unsharpened swedge for combat and piercing applications. Sure, it will be a bit harder on your baton for bushcrafting purposes, but by no means a deal-breaker! Besides, it's nice to know that I have a knife that can handle combat and self defense roles as well! You never know when you might have to fend off a wild animal. The spine of the blade also comes ground to a very nice 90 degree angle suitable for striking a ferro rod! Another welcomed bonus! Finally, and probably the most awesome feature about the knife....NO SERRATIONS!!! FINALLY! It's about time Gerber finally produce an outdoor fixed blade knife without serrations! So enjoy this one folks because it may be a while before Gerber makes anymore plain edged knives! Lol The sheath: This sheath is probably one of the most well thought out and well executed sheaths I've ever received on a production knife! I definitely prefer this sheath to the over-praised ESEE sheaths! The sheath is constructed from a high quality thermo-plastic with plenty of rivets and lashing points for molle and paracord lashing options. The sheath also sports a detachable clip for scout-carry and can also be adjusted for another molle type carry on the back side of the sheath using a removable clip. If this weren't enough, the sheath also comes standard with high quality and well finished, thick nylon webbing for standard drop-leg belt carry options. The button snaps are very strong and quality made! I don't see this sheath having any issues whatsoever, but in the event that you ever do, Gerber has a sterling reputation as far as their customer service and warranty goes, so I don't think you'll have any worries! And for the lefties out there, this sheath is also designed to allow the user to insert the knife into the sheath in either left or right handed orientation. Great job Gerber! It's excellent to see a company finally showing us lefties some attention! Bottom line: Buy this knife! I'd certainly buy this knife again in a heart beat! This knife is certainly worth it's exceptional price point of $47 as of June, 2016. For that price, I would pick up two and put one away as a backup! I'm a strong believer of the "two is one, and one is none" motto! Highly recommended! Hopefully this knife will change a lot of people's minds about Gerber!

Decided to nab one up before they got too ridiculous in price because of the high praise this model has of its durability. Right out of the box it is razor sharp and very light for its size. 420HC gets a lot of hate for its edge retention, but makes up for it with ease of sharpening. The handle is a little narrow to my liking, I wear 2xl gloves, but it still feels super comfortable in wet environments or with gloved hands. Really love the diamond rubber texture handle, super grippy and comfortable to hold when using it for laborious work. The biggest selling point is its durability. I’ve not tested mine but seen it get absolutely abused and still keep going. Look at Joe X’s review on YouTube to see what it can do! It’s perfect for self defensive and general use in camping, and not overly huge to the point of being hard to carry. It’s not a carver but it’s not a thinner blade that slots for fine details; It can do it of course. The last thing I want to touch on is the sheath. Super impressed with the amount of options for carrying this beast around. Great for left and right handed folks, you can strap it to your belt, pack, combat vest, leg, etc, and the snaps feel solid. The only thing I can say negatively is the grind is off with the bevel towards the tip but it isn’t a huge deal per se. The finish is very well done, granted the coating will eventually wear off, but the steel looks beautiful regardless. I have been a fan of Gerber since the Mark 2 dagger and Yari tanto models. I don’t think this knife is worth the 100 at full sell for the steel choice, but catch it on sale and you get yourself a solid EDC all rounder knife. 4 stars from me. Ps. Please bring back the Yari 2 in S30V

I hope the rest of Gerber knives follow this trend. For a while there, I didn't think Gerber would come out with anything good again, but this knife has renewed my faith. :) It may only be 420HC steel, but the heat treatment did the trick. Being from Oregon, this knife was in constatnt contact with moisture. Never once, did I spot any rust or corrosion from its trips to the beach (prying open mussels and oysters) or in the wet forest (hunting for chanterelle mushrooms). I purchased this knife back in January 2017, and it has been on just about every adventure I have gone on since. I wanted to really use and abuse this knife; even use it for some finer tasks. In the end, I found that it loves to be abused. Taking a look at my photographs ten months after I purchased it, the only real noticeable defects now are some scratches on the black ceramic coating around the tip of the blade, and one little notch on the edge. Now, I didn't go stabbing old metal water heaters or practice emergency escapes from a Humvee, but I did a fair amount of batoning, chopping, and prying in the woods. The blade was in contact with wood, rope, concrete, and dirt. The point was never precise to begin with (see pictures), but now it is even more "flat". I love the diamond-texture grip of the handle. Very comfortable and easy to word with. My wife really like the handle too and she has smaller hands than I. The handle itself showed very little signs of wear. The fiberglass-infused plastic hand guard did take a little beating. There are gouges and scratches all over the hand guard -- yet no cracks or broken pieces. The "dull" clip point is actually one of my favorite parts about this knife. It can be hammered upon without worry of dulling, bending, or damaging the tip of the blade, yet it still provides an narrow enough point for excellent stabbing, chiseling, and some bushcraft. The pommel at the end of the handle creates the perfect sized lip for an overhanging finger (or two) so one could extent the reach of the blade. I was also very impressed by the MOLLE-capable hard plastic sheath. It is very durable and just as handy on a backpack as it is on your belt. The real downfalls I saw from the knife were in completing finer tasks. The saber grind and thickness of the blade made food preparation (slicing) more difficult. You could make a decent feather stick, but when carving a wooden spoon from a piece of maple, rounding the end of a spoon was very difficult. That being said, I'm sure if one put a more aggressive edge on the blade, you could get better results. The pictures I have posted show the uneven beveling of the edge. In my opinion, Gerber has finally produced something worth being call "GERBER". And for $50, this knife will outlast many of its competitors.

Ein richtig tolles Messer. Es liegt m.E. Richtig gut in der Hand. Ich finde es nur allgemein seltsam, dass dieses Messer zu so unterschiedlichen Preisen im Netz angeboten wird. Ich bin zufrieden, obwohl ich eigentlich doch eher zur glatten Klinge tendieren würde. Wie oft kommt es schon vor, dass ich Seile, oder Sonstiges mit einer geriffelten Klinge schneiden werde!? Ich glaube, eine glatte Klinge wäre für mich besser gewesen. Dennoch ist das Produkt klasse.

Couteau agréable a manier, pas trop lourd, la lame est épaisse et le manche confortable. J aurais aimer une garde un peu plus marquée, le système de verrouillage est efficace, le support horizontal pour ceinture est appréciable. Les pressions du support de ceinture classique sont très dur a détacher et mal serties, elle s'arrachent au premier essai, prévoir de les remplacer.

Es la actualización del Prodigy, el cuchillo en si es muy parecido con el prodigy, apenas cambia el rompecocos y un poco el mango, donde si cambia y es lo que me llevo a comprarlo es en la funda, mucho mas versátil y adaptable al sistema MOLLE. En mi opinión es un excelente cuchillo, con acero 440 "Made in USA" y excelentes acabados. Es claramente un cuchillo militar alejado de los comerciales Bear Grylls.

Das Gerber Strongarm ist ein Messer was mich von Anfang an begeistert hat. Schon beim Auspacken merkt man das es sich um ein Topprodukt handelt. Das Tragegestell was mit geliefert wird ist zugegeben erstmal gewöhnungsbedürftig. Die Druckknöpfe sind mir ein wenig zu leichtgängig und die Nähte ein wenig grob verarbeitet. Die Scheide an sich ist super und kann auch ohne das Stoffding quer am Gürtel getragen werden. Also erster Test der Tragetest. Ich trug das Messer mehrere Tage auf alle erdenkliche Weise, vertikal horizontal und kopfüber nach unten. Man merkt das Messer kaum beim Tragen egal in welcher Position. Dann der Test Handlage Ergonomie. Was soll ich sagen der Griff des Messers ist sehr handlich und auch rutschfest. Man kann mit dem Messer längere Zeit arbeiten ohne Blasen an den Händen zu bekommen. Was uns sofort zum nächsten Test bringt. Robustheit Tauglichkeit Schärfe und Stahl. Nach dem Auspacken erstmal der Obligatorische Papiertest. Das Ergebnis war überzeugend dann alter Gartenschlauch ein Kabelbinder und für den Wellschliff ein Seil. Alles mit pravur bestanden. Also ab ins Holz und testen was es kann. Das Messer gibt es in zwei Versionen einmal mit Teilwelle und einmal ohne. Ich hab das Messer mit Teilwelle. Die Klinge hat eine Länge von 12,2 cm und eine Dicke von 5mm. Der verwendete Stahl ist ein 420hc mit einer Härte siehe Beschreibung 😏 Der 420er hc sollte bitte nicht verwechselt werden mit dem Wald und Wiesen 420er! Der hier verwendete Stahl stellt für mich einen Kompromiss aus Haltbarkeit und Bezahlbarkeit dar. Die Beschichtung ist auch sehr robust und löst sich nicht so schnell wie beim Glock 78 ab. Da es hier aber um das Gerber geht weiter zum Test. Holz spalten geht fast wie von allein die Spaltwirkung der Klinge ist enorm. Schnitzen und Zunderherstellung sind mit diesem Messer keine Arbeit sondern Spaß. Anreißen des Feuerstahls ohne Probleme und mit ordentlichen Funkenflug. Fazit : Für etwas mehr oder weniger als 100 Euro hat man ein absolut funktionales Messer für fast alle Outdoortätigkeiten. Die Klinge und vor allem die Spitze halten großen Belastungen stand. Die Schnitthaltigkeit ist für diese Preisklasse ohne Konkurrenz. Ein optimales Messer für härtere Jobs.
