**Q: Pulled out my rotted 1x4 expansion wood and will have 1-2" void under backer rod when installed.  Any requirement to put something like sand under it?**
A: i think sand would work. Maybe backer rod under backer rod ?

**Q: Can this rod be easily compressed to fit into narrow spaces?**
A: Yes, it is foam and can be compressed by more than half, it can also be trimmed with scissors if needed.

**Q: Can this be used as concrete joint filler?**
A: Yes this works well to fill a gap in concrete, but it should be topped off a good caulk approved for use with cement.

**Q: it is stiff enough to force into the void in the garage door bottom seal?  I just replaced the seal and was looking for something to help keep shape**
A: I actually have some of this 1" backer rod slipped into the seal on my door to fix a section that separated. But it might be kind of difficult to pull into many feet of seal.

This backer rod is part of my sidewalk expansion joint replacement. Pulled the old, rotting wood, filled the crevice with paver sand to 1.5 inches from the top. Tamped it down and leveled with a piece of 1.5 inch wood. Laid this backer rod on top of the sand, which fit tightly and sealed against the cement. The backer rod also reduces the amount of sealant caulk needed. Ideal depth is about 1/2 inch of this self leveling sealant. End result is shown.The local blue and orange stores did not carry the 1 inch backer rod, but this shipped quickly at a very reasonable cost. It is the density needed for this job and cuts easily with ordinary scissors. Don’t settle for the more common 3/4 inch, which may not yield a tight seal essential for SSL caulk.Highly recommended

I needed to reseal the driveway expansion joint. Use this backer rod and SIKA Sikaflex Self Leveling Sealant to seal it. Worked great. just be sure to measure the gap you have and bought whatever width you need. I little bit of a tight fit is good so the sealer doesn't just leak down past the backer rod. Lots of how to videos on YouTube if you need to fix yours.
