Professional 0-10mm Dial Indicator Gauge with Magnetic Base & Point Precision Inspection Set Tester Gage Gauge 0.01mm

My left front brake caliper was not fully releasing, and overheating the rotor. Even after a short, slow, drive home, that rotor was 470F and the other side was 144F. The car had been driven "normally" a day or two before this, and I'm sure it got significantly hotter than 470F. I rebuilt the caliper, but was concerned about rotor warpage. Thanks to this gauge, I was able to determine the rotor is indeed now out of spec - but just barely. The run-out limit is 0.05mm (0.002in), this gauge has it at 0.06mm. I don't feel any pulsation in the brakes, so the rotor can stay. I already knew there was some warping, but there's peace of mind in knowing how much. I'm really glad I got the metric version on this gauge. I think having 5 little lines (0.01mm each) of resolution is easier to read than the SAE gauge where there would be only 2 little lines (0.001 in. each).

This is a good tool, works as expected. It is precise, within expected tolerances. However, there are few things to note: Pros: 1. Good, precise measurements - its whats is supposed to do; 2. Included are a lot of heads for measuring various depths, thicknesses, etc 3. Magnetic base with on/off lever 4. good quality arms, excellent finish and precision 5. really like the fine adjustment on the secondary arm. makes it easy to adjust to zero without touching the dial indicator Cons: 1. it has a plastic back which is supposed to attach to the secondary arm with a nut but if you do that you'll notice the surface of the plastic is not perfect flat and the nut will make the device slide/move which makes it imprecise. The plastic backing makes this dial indicator feel cheap. 2. the magnetic base/magnet is weak. at a certain angle the device will fall off/peel off the surface is attached to magnetically 3. the main arm is screwed in the magnetic base with a nut tight to keep it from moving. The magnetic base seems to be made from aluminium. the threads in the magnetic base are almost stripped trying to tight that nut. 4. the dial ring around the dial indicator is too tight (probably not properly assembled or de-burred) trying to adjust to zero is almost impossible - even with the lock screw lessened completely. completely disturbs the measurement.

Used to gauge runout on new rotors, the magnet is weak, I should have chosen the clamps on model.

Remembering this is low cost, it still left a bit to be desired. The piston was “sticky” from about 3.5mm to 5mm. I had to remove the back and loosen an interior screw to release pressure from the pinion on the rack. Hopefully that screw does not now fall out. Also, the dial could not be adjusted to zero. I had to add about .25mm of shims to the top to bring the piston high enough to register at zero. Warning: do not let go of the piston if you remove the top screw. The piston will retract into the dial. Benefit from my experience! I haven’t checked accuracy, but for my purposes, I only need precision to determine flatness or concentricity (not the amount out). Before anyone thinks it: regarding setting to zero, it was not about rotating the dial to zero. The millimeter subdial needed to be zeroed out because it was reading negative. By raising the piston with shims, I could get it to zero.

The included dial is questionable. Its tough to get 0, and keep it. I now just reference the number on the dial when i put it in place, and use it as 0. Everything else in package (including the storage box), is fine. I might end up just replacing the dial at some point.
