After seeing a naturopath about 9 years ago, I was introduced to using digestive enzymes to help me digest my food more efficiently. They help with breaking down foods such as fats, proteins, and carbs in an efficient way, and in many cases prevent digestive discomfort (or shorten the duration of it anyway). They help so much with difficult to digest foods such as steak. I take them with most meals, usually lunch and dinner. My husband uses them for all meals, plus he also takes Betatine HCL because he has low stomach acid production. This seriously reduces the amount of gas, bloating and discomfort that we both face.All that said, this is a different brand of digestive enzyme than I typically purchase. I thought I'd give it a try because I was offered a bottle for free, to provide an honest review. I've been trying it out this past week in replacement of my usual enzymes. These are considered a broad spectrum enzyme, since it provides enzymes to break down fat, carbs and protein. I believe however that it lacks a very important enzyme - lactase. A large number of Americans including myself and my husband, are lactose intolerant (intolerant to the sugar found in milk). The regular enzymes I take include this enzyme, so I don't need to supplement with anything else for my digestion other than my probiotics.For this reason, I can only give this product 3 stars rather than 5. It worked well for all meals that didn't include milk. However if there was milk/cheese/etc then both of us had digestive issues, and that is in large part why we take the enzymes in the first place. I don't want to have to purchase another supplement for the lactase enzyme too.I would not purchase this product in the future due to this issue. Digestive enzymes help break down the foods we eat into nutrients that our bodies can readily absorb. You might be eating the healthiest diet ever, but if your body is unable to break down that food into nutrients (which your digestive system absorbs), then you are not absorbing all the healthy stuff you are trying to eat in the first place. I used to think of my digestive system being in great shape but after having a baby and not being able to eat as regularly or as good as I used to, I have noticed my stomach make a lot of noise lately. I have previously bought digestive enzymes for my husband and even enzymes for cats because I truly believe your health comes partially from your gut.I doubt these are “ultra long lasting”, if you are allowed to take up to 6 capsules daily – this only makes this whole bottle last less than 17 days. I’ve only been taking them on an as needed basis or when I can feel my stomach making noise. You are supposed to take one or two capsules with food. They do have a somewhat unpleasant smell to me; maybe it’s the bovine gelatin, but they have no taste or smell when taken. I can tell a difference almost right away, my stomach feels lighter and feels like there is less air traveling through my intestines. Some days I don’t get to eat dinner till late and by that time I can feel bubbles on the sides of my stomach. These enzymes calm it down and I feel like my whole digestive tract is working like a well-oiled machine. These definitely work for me and I love that they are free of GMOs and other synthetic additives.I was given a discount in exchange for my honest and unbiased review and like many others, I always check product reviews on amazon before purchasing them. My nutrissa digestive enzymes arrived 4 days earlier then expected. They come nicely packaged in padded envelope.I've always suffered from a poor digestive system, but it even got worse after having my gallbladder removed a couple years ago. I always feel so miserable after eating pretty much anything but especially fatty meals. I get horrible bloating, and very bad indigestion/heartburn. I stared using digestive enzymes about 10 months ago, been using NOW brand, they seem to be helping. I ran across nutrissa digestive enzyme brand and wanted to give them a try, so far I love them, seem to be working better than the other brand. They are very small and easy to swallow -Take 1 to 2 capsules with each meal - for best results according to the bottle. I've tried many different enzymes, these work the best for me. I have no gastro issues from taking them and they help me digest better some of my 'trouble foods' like cabbage, fiber, and sugar alcohols. Although I got the first bottle for free in return for an honest review, I'm about to re-order them at full price, they work that well.
