Short bristles that don't reach my eyelid, just the lashes. No clumping. I will need to curl my lashes first next time. There was no smudging!! Very often I forget I've just put mascara on, close my eyes and end up with a black smudge under my eyes. I was feeling confident, so I covered my bottom lashes, too. Then, the ultimate test - to go out on a hot day and see if it stayed in place. Yes it did. My ultra sensitive eyes weren't affected, either. In the evening, I gently washed it off with warm water on a facecloth. In future, I will pre-curl my lashes to get them more noticeable. There is no major volume with this mascara, but is perfect for not irritating sensitive eyes, or washing off in a menopausal hot flush.
