Review: Solid hatchet for batoning to make kindling - This is a great hatchet for making kindling at the fire pit. At 16in, it requires some hand and forearm strength to wield one-handed for any length of time. You can hold it near the head for finer control. I clamped the hatchet in a vise and sharpened up the factory edge a bit, then I used it to carve a baton (wood mallet). I carved a smaller diameter hand grip on one end of a 4" diameter, 14" long piece of hickory. This is a fairly heavy baton and is great for striking the hatchet. I'm using the hatchet in place of a froe. I take wood that has already been roughly split with the big maul, and make smaller kindling with the hatchet. I stand the log on end, and hold the hatchet in my off hand, placing the hatchet blade on the log where I want to start the split. This holds the log in place and keeps my hands far away from the tools, then I strike the hatchet on the hammer face with the wood baton. Warning - do NOT strike this hatchet with a steel tool! Use only another log or purpose-made wood baton to avoid damaging the hatchet or creating flying metal shards. The narrow head and sharp blade profile make it easy to split off 1/4” to 3/8" thick oak and hickory chips from a short, 4" long piece of cut log, for use in a smoker or for re-kindling an old fire from coals. The nice thing about this hatchet, being all one piece of forged steel, is that if the hatchet gets buried in a longer log before the log splits apart, you can strike the handle next to the head to finish the split, similar to using a froe. The thick rubber handle helps reduce the shock you feel in your off hand when you do this. Of, course, you can use this for chopping like any other hatchet, and the extra length and heft allow you to chop more forcefully than with smaller hatchets. Since the handle is so strong, you can pry with it as well, without worrying about breaking the handle off. The nice stickers and paint will get scuffed up and rubbed away with use of course - this is a real working tool. I laughed when someone complained about that. The stitched and riveted nylon sheath fits snugly, with 2 secure snaps. The hammer remains exposed, so you can use this to drive stakes or other things with the sheath in place and blade safely covered. The handle has a hole at the butt end, which you could use for a loop of cord to hang it on a nail. Don't be tempted to use it for a wrist lanyard though, because if you ever lose your grip, it will swing around on the lanyard, pivoting back toward yourself, and likely hit something you won't like!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How do I take care of my Estwing axe?**
A: e.prender1.never chop into the ground or strike rocks with your axe,it could be your life line!!! 2.always sharpen it after use. 3.use a light oil to rub on it. 4. never leave it outdoors, put it in your tent or under a tarp.5.don't ever grind on it with a grinder. 6. don't put handle close to your fire. 7. when chopping, put your limb on a larger piece of wood to chop against,do not chop your piece of wood on the ground.8. keep your feet away from chopping area:wide straddle stance.9. put cover on axe when not in use. hope this helps.

**Q: One review said the handle was hollow. If true, should i just buy a wooden handle axe?**
A: They are hollow but, my husband had his last one for over twenty years. Used hard as a saddle axe. It just finally gave up this last winter. So if they make them like they used to these are darn good to own

**Q: What steel is this made of?**
A: All Estwing striking tools are made from 1055 steel. I called Estwing and asked. Very helpful peeps!

**Q: is it better quality than the standard estwing camp axe**
A: Tho I don't own the standard one, I think it's the same indestructible ax, but in a mat black finish. The sheath is black cordura, I think the standard one may be in leather. Overall I like mine and opted for the black finish, which has been reasonably durable. Hope this helps.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Half axe but not half assed...
*by D***Y on January 12, 2013*

I got the Estwing E-45A Campers axe a couple days ago and I am very pleased with what I received. The axe was on backorder for a couple weeks but I was informed of the status of my order several times during my wait. I am very glad I purchased this axe. I have used a half axe about this size about 45 years ago and found them very handy when camping and at Boy Scout Camp. Full sized axes were just too big for most scouts. If they used them they worked themselves to death and would stop. Then you couldn't get them to help again. Of course this was when scouts could use axes and sheath knives. I still have a couple full size axes but wanted to see if these were still as easy to use as I remember. This is a great tool and is of the highest quality. First, the sheath is old school and made of beautiful thick tooled leather. The sheath is heavily stitched and has strong rivets and double snaps. The fit is snug and a very safe way to transport the axe. It is well tanned but was a little dry so the first thing I did was to wipe it down with neatsfoot oil. I recently saved a old leather sheath for a 18 " machete that had been in a shed for twenty years with neatsfoot oil it took weeks but it is restored to almost perfect condition. You don't see much neatsfoot oil around today. The axe blade is beautiful and just the right size for my uses now. The edge was rolled a little when I checked it but with a few licks across a steel that was cleared up. I can use this thing without killing myself. I can even use it with one hand if need be. The stainless was very smooth and well brushed to a medium shine. The shaft appear to go all the way through the handle. I can't guarantie that it goes all the way through the handle but if is like several of my other Estwing tools it does. The grip is designed to absorb vibrations and does so very well. If it last as well as my others I will be passing this down to my grandson with the other Estwing tools. I would not carry this if I was backpacking but think it will be the best general camp tool that you can have if you like an evening fire. Now if I was in a Zombie invasion I think this would just about be the perfect tool/weapon. It has enough wight to pierce a skull but not so much weight to cause you to over swing wasting time and energy. I would recommend this axe from this dealer in a skinny minute and if I needed another I would have no second thoughts about its quality. I Highly Recommend This Axe -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- .
