## Description

desertcart.com With the 3M indoor patio door insulator kit, you can lower your heating bills during the winter and make your home more energy-efficient. Part of 3M's line of energy-saving products, this kit includes insulation film and a roll of double-sided mounting tape to create an airtight seal. Stretching the film removes wrinkles for a transparent view. This kit enables you to insulate one patio door measuring 6 feet 8 inches by 9 feet.Keep the Heat In and the Cold Out Made by 3M, this indoor patio door insulator kit contains insulation film along with Scotch film tape to keep cold drafts out and warm air in. As a result, you can reduce your heating costs during the winter. The film shrinks tight around your door frame for a transparent, wrinkle-free fit and is made to reduce condensation and prevent frost build-up. Double-Sided Mounting Tape for a Secure Seal Included with this kit is a 1/2-inch-by-13-4/5-yard roll of 3M film mounting tape to keep your insulation in place all season long. This double-sided tape seals off cracks and crevices, creates an airtight seal, and establishes a strong bond between the surface, the tape, and the insulation film, as recommended in ENERGY STAR's "Seal and Insulate" guidelines. Featuring a convenient, ready-to-peel liner, the tape adheres easily to a variety of surfaces and stays intact upon removal.Simple, Fast Installation Installing the door insulation is easy. You simply unfold the film and cut it to the width of the door frame, allowing an extra inch on all sides. Next, you firmly apply the mounting tape around the frame and remove the paper liner. Then you apply the film to the tape, starting at the top of the door, and reposition and stretch the film to remove wrinkles. Finally, you use a blow dryer to remove any remaining wrinkles, then trim any excess film.Made in the United States, and designed for indoor use only, this insulator kit can be used with aluminum, vinyl-clad, or painted or varnished wood molding, but it should not be applied to veneer paneling or Lauan mahogany molding. The film and tape should be removed from the door at the end of the season. The film measures 7 square yards, or 7 feet by 9.3 feet by 0.75 thousandths of an inch (H x W x D), and weighs 0.24 pounds. What's in the Box Insulation film and one roll of mounting tape. Product Description Available in a variety of indoor and outdoor window sizes, 3M Window Insulator Kits keep cold drafts out and warm air in through heat shrink window film and Scotch Window Film Mounting Tape. Quick and easy installation. 3M window kits stay up all season long with Scotch tape technology. Clearest window film available.

Review: excellent product - I initially bought the Frost King plastic from Lowe's because they didn't have 3M. After reading these reviews I decided not to use it, and ordered the 3M from desertcart instead. I can't say how the Frost King worked, but I was doubtful about it from the start because the packaging looked cheap and generic. The 3M worked GREAT, and was so easy to use. The tape sticks to the window frame (I followed the directions and wiped the wood with a wet rag, then alcohol) and the plastic sticks to the tape. The plastic is also completely clear. It's been up for about a week now, and the tape is still sticking. The plastic keeps out drafts, so it's more comfortable to sit next to a window, but I don't know how effective it will really be at lowering my heating bill-hopefully it will help a little. My windows have blinds so I had to cover them with the plastic, but I removed the handles before I put up the plastic, then reattached one of them on the outside so I can open and close the one I like to see out of. Of course it made a tiny hole at the top, but I just covered it with a piece of scotch tape. Having curtains would be ideal though, you can open them to see outside and they will insulate more. I used the patio door kit in my living room where I have 2 windows side by side and I didn't think the window kit would be wide enough, and also bought a 5 window kit-they are exactly the same, the window plastic is just a little smaller, but it will easily cover any standard window. I am returning the Frost King.
Review: Couldn't be easier! - I was a bit skeptical of any plastic insulating product for windows after reading some of the reviews but just applied this to 4 huge windows and it couldn't have gone any easier. I didn't prep with alcohol because I knew my trim was clean, but if you do prep you need to wait at least several hours before trying to apply the tape or better, hit it with a blow dryer to burn off the residue. The tape will NOT stick if you don't burn off the alcohol so maybe some people are having issues because of that. I applied the tape, made cuts are my radius corners to fill them well, overlapping tape by first lifting up the paper back for an inch or so on each side. Left one corner with exposed sticky tape up top to start and got my plastic square with window and did a 6 inch top and 6 inch down side square so I could pull across as I applied the plastic across the top of the window. Once reaching the other side I then went down 6 inches on the side pulling to match the other side - square - and continued on this way til hit the beginning of the bottom curves, left them alone and pulled down to apply the plastic along bottom window ledge, then did the sides to adjust. I found you can get this tight as a drum without having to use a blowdryer, and it will allow you to pull it up and restick to smooth out any wrinkles from a bad alignment. Once set for a bit though, it's not moving. Take a pair of scrissors and start a cut close to your frame, then push the scissors blade along with the plastic deep in the back of the blades - you can get a cut flush with the trim so you won't even see plastic edges. These are absolutely crystal clear, you cannot tell you are looking through plastic. I've got this over windows where my orchids take sun, didn't want them to get cold :) Double sided tape does come with the kit but I had ordered more and glad I did as I ran out of tape but still have enough plastic left over to do another large window and a small one. I am amazed how many windows I got out of the patio door kit, I just thought out best way to cut and the great thing about this huge sheet is that you always have a fresh square edge to work with when putting up another window covering. Wish I hadn't waited a year to try it, my orchids seem to be happier and it's kept the heat inside up several degrees. Win win. My sister now wants to try some for her house as she's seen how absolutely clear it is. 5 stars!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Will this work for insulating from the heat of a hot climate too?**
A: I would assume so, though we live in Maine near the coast where it can be in the teens and 20s sometimesduring the weather; I assume it would work since 3M is an excellent product - the hardware versionsdon't seem to work as well. You'll need the 3M tape for this as well.

**Q: Has anyone had success applying this to a window without trim? Our 50s track house just has drywall-cased windows.**
A: I want an answer to this too! I also have the drywall-cased windows from the 50s. Thanks!!

**Q: I am from the South, so my big question is, does it insulates from heat so well as it does from cold?
Will it last if you leave it permanently, or you need to replace it every year?
Third question would be, can you glue it against dry wall?
Thanks**
A: Old query, but for newbies: this would work as well to keep the A/C air away from the window pane, thus it would insulate heat as well as cold. It's just physics. It forms a dead air space just like a storm window (if you know what those are up north). You could leave it on, but probably would not last permanently. I don't see how you could use glue; it is intended to be mounted only with the double stick tape provided in the box. Browse other replies who have said that they applied it directly to dry wall (sheet rock).
BTW another response said: “Yes but you can run into a moisture issue. We tried it and it it worked well except that the A/C created condensation on the plastic which eventually pooled up between the window and the plastic creating mold”

**Q: How does this hold up compared to frost king?**
A: This holds up much better then frost king... I have never had frost king last a whole season on my windows but the 3M lasts no matter how long the cold season has lasted. I will never go back to using Frost King again.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ So much better than Frost King and well worth the extra money
*by J***N on December 30, 2011*

I have 3 patio doors in my townhouse and used the Frost King window film last year to insulate the windows and had all kinds of trouble-it didn't stick to the tape, didn't shrink well, and gave a distorted view through the window. This year I decided to try the 3M brand- what a world of difference! It was so much easier to install. The film is thicker than the Frost King and easier to handle because it's not as flimsy. It shrinks well and creates very little distortion in the view through the window. The Scotch brand double stick tape seals well. The only reason I don't give this product 5 stars is because the tape doesn't stick to the metal at the bottom of the patio door frame. As a renter I didn't want to nail in a wood strip for the tape to adhere to, as the directions suggest, but found that a second row of tape along the edge of the carpet did the trick.
