Nice pad for using a laptop on your lap
I'm not a big fan of those "active" cooling pads which require a fan for when I'm sitting on the couch and watching TV. They tend to be loud and suck power from your laptop. Instead of a fan, these pads have a crystal inside which turns into a gel when heated. This phase change actually absorbs the heat, rather then transferring it to your lap. No batteries required! I originally had a pad which I liked very much, but one of our cats pissed on it and well that was that. I then bought a Targus pad, but it was too thin and didn't have enough of the crystals in it. The result is that in under an hour, you started noticing your lap becoming warm and then quite hot. This pad is pretty well thought out. There is a fair bit of the phase changing crystal and the neoprene "pouch" really ends up being a good insulator. The result is a few hours worth of heat protection. The neoprene also prevents the pad from sliding off your lap too easily (another problem with the Targus). Even after all the crystal has converted to the gel, the neoprene still provides some protection which is adequate if you're not hitting the CPU really hard.

Passive
I liked this product at first, then I realized it didn't really do anything. When I played a game on my MacBook Air, the LapSaver did nothing to lower the heat. The crystals melted and the mat got warm. I never tried freezing it, but I think that might help. Also when I use it on my lap, it's flimsy and it sags. Would be nice if it had a solid back to stay straight.I still use it only because I spent too much to throw it away.

Works! And better used on a firm flat surface
I think it is a great idea and works very well. Works better when on a flat surface, because as the crystals melt they migrate towards the corners and reform if the pad is draped over a lap. To get them to the center again, I lay the LapSaver on the sidewalk in the Arizona sun and massage them back to the center. I hope this can be improved with tighter quilting or some other solution for the future versions.

Worthless
Did not help keep my Laptop cool. I bought this for my 2012 MacBook Pro and it took about 5 minutes for the pad to get just as hot as the computer. I wasn't expecting much for $7 but this literally did NOTHING at all.

Great idea; poor in reality.
I've used this for a week now. I have a SSD with no built in fan. Although the manufacturer says it does not over heat, well, it does. It gets really hot and then the mouse jumps around...ALOT. So I needed a cooling pad. The noise of the fan on most cooling pads is irritating and can make me ill if I have a migraine. So I wanted something quiet, that I could use on my lap and NOT on a table as I use my laptop...on my LAP. This looked like the perfect solution but I had my doubts. At first I thought maybe it would work. The computer was warm but not hot. The gel would liquify and I would flip it around as the heat comes out of the hinge and not the other end of the computer. I thought this was working. Now, I am on my computer ALOT, probably more than 10 hours a day, so it is going to get hot. This cooling pad will be *okay* for maybe the first hour.So I thought, maybe I needed to throw it in the freezer. Made no difference. Still ineffective. I use it now as a barrier so that my lap doesn't get hot.At the price I purchased it for, we figured we wouldn't be out too much if it didn't work. Se la vie. My search will continue for something that actually cools my computer with minimal to no noise.

Highly Recommended.
I normally use my Macbook Pro 17” on a desk with a metal stand that provides circulation along with a separate keyboard and turbo mouse. When I started using it on a boat (as a laptop), I was surprised and annoyed to find how hot the laptop got and how much time the fan was running at top speed. I was using a throw pillow to keep the computer from burning my legs but that didn’t help keep the fan from running almost non stop.I’m not sure how the pad does it, but my laptop fan hardly goes on since I started using it.I’m impressed.

Keeps the heat off my lap for over six hours ...
Keeps the heat off my lap for over six hours (15" core duo, 1.8GHz). A little awkward flipping and turning it but also keeps computer much cooler. It is "crunchy" and if you flex it while cold, I could see how it might tear - so don't.
