This is an excellent and sturdy sand timer. When I pulled it out of the box my son reacted with astonished delight because it turns out that his second-grade teacher had a whole set of these timers in her classroom. It does work as a timer, but this is thousands-year-old technology; I really only used timing my son's homework as an excuse to get a big sand timer. If you used to play with egg timers or the minute timers that come in some games, but wished they would run longer, you will love this. Everyone in the family has spent at least 20 minutes just watching the sand fall. My son does occasionally use it for his homework but usually uses a modern timer cube instead, which is more practical. I've used the sand timer for piano practice, and the nice feature for this purpose is the lack of an annoying alarm - if the sand runs out in the middle of a song I can keep playing to the end of the song without interruption. But mostly we use this as a somewhat mesmerizing toy. The timer is accurate in the sense that it will always run for the exact same amount of time; this time may differ from 20 minutes by up to 10%, as is clearly stated on the top of the timer, so an individual timer will have a "setting" (not adjustable) of between 18 and 22 minutes.

I purchased this to send to school with my son to help keep him on task during independent work times (kindergarten). So far the teacher said it seems to be working well and it does help him stay more focused! Plus he liked picking out his own color timer.

We use this for our 4 year old to help her understand time. We mainly use it at the dinner table so she firsbt dawdle ( only employed after everyone else is done eating and she’s still only taken 3 bites because she has been chatting all dinner!) It’s much better than the numerical timer we were using because she can’t read clocks and has no concept of “you have 10 minutes to finish if you want a treat!” “ only 8 minutes left!” “Okay, take another bite... the time is half gone but you still have a lot of food” etc

This works great in the cafeteria for one of my students that always sneak out of his seat and doesn't get to finish his lunch.

My granddaughter enjoys turning it over at the start of dinner. Want dessert? Gotta try one bite of everything on your plate and otherwise eat a substantial part of your meal before the sand runs out. It's made dinner time less of a struggle for this fussy eater. We expect to use in in other situations down the road. I love the attractive and low-tech appearance. So does my granddaughter. It is sturdy and safe for a child to handle.

The hourglass works fine, and is reasonably close to 30minutes as described.However, it is blue with blue sand, not black with grey sand as shown in the photo

Our preschoolers love this timer! They use it to share toys and no longer get in squabbles over things. "When can I have a turn?" "In two minutes!" Off to get the sand timer... turn the timer over... watch the timers... "Okay, it's my turn!" "Here you go!" Great stuff!!!

10 year old loves it, seems sturdy enough, not glass [huge plus]. I believe ours timed approximately 56.xx minutes, I dont exactly remember but it was close enough for our needs. This was originally out of stock for several months, glad I watched and waited for this particular one.

I am a teacher and this comes in handy when you want to provide kids with a visual on how much time is left for certain activity. It is much cheaper compare to the price they are selling at the other educational supplies stores. There is a +/- 10% error, but it is not a big deal to me.

is exactly what i expected. has been dropped by the kiddos a few times and has not cracked. hourglass inside case shifted a little bit sand still flows smoothly. worth the money other than a long shipping time.
