Does perfect repairs on thin pages
First, a clue for those who are concerned about the fact that this is thin tape on backing and it may be hard to remove from the backing: The working tape is on the convex side of the tape roll as you unroll it. Unroll and cut a little longer than you need for the repair, then fold about a half inch or a little less inward (toward the concave side), crease, unfold, and refold again, if necessary, to free a bit of working tape from the backing. Once the tape is lifted a little off the backing, scrape it with a fingernail or knife and you can easily peel it off the backing. Be careful not to let the unpeeled tape roll up on itself.I used this to repair an old Japanese language book printed on very thin paper. The repair was invisible when done. I used a bone folder to smooth and flatten the pages (which also had a little water damage) before I started, a sharp knife to trim the excess tape, and the bone folder again to smooth out my repair and make the tape invisible. The text is perfectly visible beneath the repair. This is a U.S.A. made product. I think it is the best product out there for repairing torn pages in books.

Takes some practice to peel it
It's good tape - I use it for mending tears in old maps. It is not quite transparent, more like translucent, but text is visible through it.I had a really hard time learning how to get it off the release paper, but now it's easy to do. The trick is to be sure you're using your fingernail on the 'rough' side, not the smooth side.

Beware: it's different tape from 2018 even w/identical packaging & description. Item No. 901-0198
This tape is different from earlier purchase and use (Item No. 901-0198). Loved the 2018 identically packaged & described/specs tape purchased 5/2018. It was beautifiully transparent for documents on light or neutral parchnent & paper (does show on blueprints). I needed more, so reordered. THIS box -batch- is nowhere as transparent---had to quickly peel it off my document--better removed than showing. Comparing the two tapes, it is surprising how different they are. Going to return it to Amazon for refund. This tape is a huge disappointment.

Good product, but inspect tape before use
It was next to impossible to initially get the tape separated from the paper backing. Once separated, I was very worried the tape was not sheer enough. To my surprise, it both stuck to the page with amazing strength, and you can hardly tell the tape is on the page. I am pleased with the outcome. It deserves 5 stars, were it not for the following flaw.I did NOT expect to have stripes of glue on the face of the tape, like railroad tracks, 1/3 of the way into the roll. There was some adhesive towards the beginning of the roll to tack it down; not surprising. I did not expect adhesive further into the roll.I finished taping a large irreplaceable out-of-print children's book on one side of the page. It looked very good. So I taped the other side as well. After the tape was applied, I noticed long strips of glue on the tape (see pic). It looked terrible, and the glue was a little tacky (sticky) -- I was worried that it would stick to the opposing page when the book is closed. So I attempted to remove the tape and try again. When you peal it off of a page, it shreds, and leaves adhesive behind. It took HOURS to remove the tape, and would have been impossible if the page wasn't heavier bond semi-gloss paper, which made it possible to use a dull paring knife. In the end, I couldn't remove all of the adhesive, but got enough off so it still looks descent, and the page is repaired. I'm disappointed that a good product has a flaw like that. Be sure to inspect the tape before you use it.

MORE PROS THAN CONS
This tape IS difficult to get started. But it CAN be started. I used the tip of a knife inserted along the edge after that you just fold down the beginning of the roll. There some yellow glue on the first foot of the roll the rest was glue free. Its also 35 feet long so if you're only buying it for a small job should be alright. Now as to the promise of virtually disappearing it's true. I used this to repair the onionskin in a 142 year old book as well as to return a large piece torn from the edge of a page and it works great.Be careful though, if you have to reposition it you can but it might take some ink with it so if you make a small mistake live with it if the document is important.

Works on Torn Dust Jackets
I've used this product extensively to mend tears in the dust jackets of books. It adheres strongly, is commendably thin, and works very well. I have repaired jackets that were in three or four pieces. They are now functional again (and I put them in a Brodart cover for further preservation).Of course, if placed inside the jacket the tape is invisible. However, some jackets are so badly damaged I have to place the tape on both sides of the tear. If the outer finish of the jacket is matte, the tape more or less disappears other than to mute any darker colors. On a glossy finish it is quite visible. This is a trade-off. I need to find a glossy tape that is as good. The product is claimed to be reversible with mineral spirits and I have found this claim to be accurate. Once I had to do this (the jacket was in pieces and I taped them together wrong) and it worked. A tip: don't be in a hurry. Get the paper good and wet with the mineral spirits and give the tape adhesive time to soften and release. Otherwise--as happened to me before I slowed down the process--the tape started to peel away the outer layer of paper when I tried to pull the tape off. I don't know the effect of mineral spirits on all dust jackets, but on the one I tried--which was uncoated paper--the chemical evaporated after a while leaving no visible trace. In sum, the product is what it claims to be and is recommended.
