This wire tracer has saved me so much time troubleshooting bad cables. Works perfectly. Tough to hate a on a tool that does exactly what you are expecting it to do. It traced each line accordingly and had no issues. I was able to organize a wildly messing server closet servicing a 12,500 sq foot office space. Very appreciative for what i was able to get done with this tool.

Works great for the applications mentioned. Had a bad CAT 6 signal wire stretching 100ft. Plugged it in and showed me which wire channel had an issue and found the break. Simple and quick.

It seems to do its job well, but some cons stand out for me. It came with weak/drained batteries that failed on me during first day of use. It would have been nice to have an extra switch of some sort on the tone generator wand that prevents it from accidentally turning on while it’s in my backpack (it turns on using the spinning volume dial). As others pointed out, it would be nice if the tone was louder on its max setting, as plugging in headphones/earbuds during real-world use is not always a realistic option when you’re squeezing through messy wiring racks and don’t need yet another cord to snag on something.

If you are buying this primarily for toning network cables, then it will be difficult in datacenter scenarios. That is my primary use. They DO provide an earphone jack on the side which works well, though. You are going to want to carry an 1/8 ear bud around or something. Dollar store will have those. For most other environments, like quiet homes or phone IDFs, this should be fine. It doesn't scream like the good ol' Fox-n-Hounds, so you will need to mess with cable separation a bit. When I find the time, was wondering if I could get a tiny project box and set up a small LED to vary in brightness to the audio signal provided at the earphone jack. That would be the ultimate. They do not give you visual indicator on the wand for toning. It would require more batteries and a separate piece to keep track of, but I think that would make this as good as any double-priced unit for toning, then. Cable tester seems simplistic, but adequate. I am going all in for 5 stars just because this thing is a USA tool and priced very well ($35 when I got it) for what it provides. Any more than that price, and I wouldn't want it.

This wire tracer kit is okay for basic jobs, but it falls short if you’re doing frequent or more demanding work. The tone generator works, but the signal can be weak over longer distances or in noisy environments, making tracing a bit frustrating at times. The probe is durable, and the built-in light is handy, but the audio volume even at max can be hard to hear in a busy job site. The included accessories (like the alligator clips and RJ45 cable) are nice touches, and the wire mapping feature is a bonus, but overall it feels more like an entry-level tool. Good for occasional home use or small projects, but I’d recommend looking at higher-end kits if you need something more reliable and consistent for professional work.

Works great for my needs. Gives a good strong signal when it picks up the tone and I can check my connections to make sure I wired and crimped the cat cable correctly.
