yes a can confirm the 10 cup thermal carafe will work with the 550 model the 12 cup thermal carafe will not as it's too wide to fit .

Yes it does and this is my 2nd unit in 7 years and I love them

Q: What's the warranty for a refurb maker?

I think it was 90 days. I also bought the extended warranty, which I "returned" as well since I had to return both coffee makers within two weeks of buying them.

Q: When I use the grinder, the coffee always tastes weak. The grinds seem like maybe they aren't fine enough to extract the full flavor. Suggestions?

I totally agree. I had to go back to using a stand alone grinder to get a finer grind so more flavor can be extracted. I shut the grinder off so it is now a basic brewer only with more parts to clean. Premium beans are too expensive to waste with this poorly designed brewer.
