Smudging is an important ceremonial purifying ritual in many North American Indigenous cultures. Before smudging was popularized, it was illegal — at least, for Indigenous folks. “It was illegal for Natives to practice their religion until 1978 in the U.S., and many were jailed and killed just for keeping our ways alive, including my great-great grandfather,” Ruth Hopkins, a Dakota/Lakota Sioux writer, tells Bustle. Smudging was part of those banned religious practices. Today, Native people are still fighting to be able to perform these ceremonies in hospitals. Smudging, therefore, is not to be taken lightly. Because of all that history, when non-Native people burn white sage to "smudge" their homes or other spaces, it minimizes the cultural importance of this ritual. Instead, advocates say non-Native people can learn to cleanse their spaces in ways that are culturally and ecologically sensitive.

Will this set off my smoke detectors?

If you hold the smoking smudge stick (or anything else smoking) right next to the detector, the detector will alarm. However, just lighting a stick somewhere in a room that has a detector shouldn't be a problem. I've walked through my house with a lighted smudge stick to "cleanse" the house (smells great) and not set off my detectors. Enjoy.

When I light the sage no smoke jus coming out, what do I do? Help

For best results, hold the Sage Bundle at a 45-degree angle and ignite the tip. Let this burn for a few seconds, and if the entire bundle catches fire, blow it out and continue to lightly blow the embers throughout your smudge. This will allow the embers to catch and stay lit. If you do not perform this, it may just go out depending on how much of the bundle is lit. In order to lengthen your burn time, remember gently blow on embers ever so often to keep the embers alive.

Hard to light, smells great.

It's very hard to keep these bundles burning - no fear it won't go out, or will burn itself out if you fail to watch it carefully. The smell is strong, but it just won't stay lit. I've gone from kitchen matches to a lighter, doesn't make a difference. I'll try another brand next time.
