Works Exactly As Claimed

The media could not be loaded. This fan is a great replacement for my old OEM Xbox fan (probably about 10 years old at the time of the replacement). Although it's possible that this difference may be in part due to the age and condition of my old fan, the Talismoon fan is noticeably quieter and more efficient, just as it claims to be. Don't try to convince yourself that this fan is silent or near silent - it isn't. However, if you have an old monster like I did, there's a good chance that this one will make a big improvement, and what noise the Talismoon fan does make is much smoother and subdued. On several occasions my Xbox would also shut down due to overheating, which I imagine was at least in part due to the struggling OEM fan. While I can't yet speak for exactly how reliable this Talismoon fan is at cooling the unit, it does move significantly more air, so I'm expecting better performance as well.Make sure to familiarize yourself with the Xbox disassembly process before you get started (you can find plenty of comprehensive guides with a simple Google search), so you don't run into any unexpected obstacles along the way. After getting into the metal case, I found it helpful to disconnect the cables from the optical drive and get it out of the way entirely, then carefully disconnect the old fan's cables before removing it from the housing. The blue LEDs in the fan are quite pleasant. I really didn't want obnoxiously bright lights, but these are subtle enough to be a neat aesthetic feature, but still bright enough to be noticed. The attached video is of my Xbox running Modern Warfare 2 splitscreen, both before and after replacement of the fan. The primary difference is between the sound in front of the TV. The back view picked up a lot of the sound from the pushed air physically hitting the microphone, which makes the sound of the Talismoon fan appear to be louder, even though it's merely due to the increased airflow, and is actually quieter and not as harsh.

Easy to install, quieter than original fan

I have an original Xbox 360 that is in our main living room. It is in a built-in entertainment center that does not have a door or anything to block the sound. This is a good thing since the Xbox (and my other components) need good ventilation, but it results in the Xbox noise to enter the living room unabated.I had read that the Xbox 360 sound level is largely due to the fans and the DVD drive. Not wanting to replace the DVD drive, I went for the fan. Using instructions I found on the Extremetech site ([...] I managed to install the fan without any special tools (other than the Torx 10 bit for my screwdriver, which is required to remove 6 screws from the console case before opening). The case was a pain to open, but not especially difficult. Once open, replacing the fan was a cinch.Once I got it all back together, I found the Xbox to be significantly quieter. In fact, I began to wonder if the fan was working. I do, however, feel air moving through the vents, so all appears to be functioning well. The blue lights on the fan are also working. Fortunately for me, they're not very bright (I wasn't going for a modified look, just a quieter fan).I've only had it in the unit for about 10 hours of playtime. It's working fine so far. If I experience any problems, I will update the review accordingly.

Seems better than original fan

I put this fan into a 2006/2007 era Xbox that was staying alive with regular "heat treatments" whenever it went to red-ring.When I first received this fan I found it of suitable quality. It seemed to have a good shape to the blades, spin freely, and have enough strong enough magnets to get the job done for a while. As many people considering purchasing this product probably know: Xbox has some heating/cooling issues. They die mainly because they over-heat. This is a design issue that $-driven Microsoft drug its feet to fix, but seems to have addressed in the newly redesigned ~2011 Xbox. However if you have an old Xbox you're dedicated to keeping alive and you push it to its limit with the complexity of processing and hours of work you put it through (like me) a slightly better fan, like this one, is probably worth the investment. Also it's blue--that's fun. I like blue LEDs as much as the next person. The bottom-line: I found that this fan helped my Xbox heating issues, especially in conjunction with an external fan (auto-on to a certain temperature) that kicks on after the Xbox turns off. After the original, older fan was replaced with this one it stayed alive longer between red-rings. But I only found truly significant improvement by removing the external case of the Xbox, replacing the original fan with this one, and placing the 2nd under the disk drive above the GPU.

Item Doesn't Fit Properly

The Talismoon version I received was 1mm shorter than the original OEM fan which prevented it from locking into place. There are 2 small round humps that span the width of the OEM fan and are integrated into the bottom of the fan housing. These round humps lift the fan just slightly off the game chassis which allows the fan to snap into the upper locks of top bracket. On the Talismoon version, these humps do not exist on the bottom of the fan which prevents the top of the fan from touching the top bracket and being able to lock into place. A true game moder would probably just glue the fan down or wedged something under the fan to suck up the extra space thereby locking the fan into the chassis, but that's not what I signed up for when I made the purchase. I was looking for a true direct / no mod fit.Bottom line, if you're looking for a OEM Fan that is guaranteed to fit correctly in your xBox without any modifications, look elsewhere. Otherwise, you'll just end up returning the fan like I did.
