This is the perfect go-to reference book for children ages five and up, with 1,000 entries and a picture for every word, making it a fantastic addition to any child's library. With 1,000 word entries and supporting images, My First Dictionary features nouns, verbs, and adjectives that are most commonly encountered by young children, and definitions that give the word's primary meaning in terms of a child's experience. Each entry in this updated edition has been checked to ensure it is current, and new words and pictures have been added to make sure this reference is relevant for today's kids. Review: Exactly What I Was Looking For - My oldest is 5 and just started kindergarten this year and I thought it would be a good idea to introduce a dictionary into his curriculum if I could find one that aligned with his skill level. As he can't read yet, I was looking for a dictionary that included a picture for every word, and a definition and an example sentence with the word to help expand his skills. This is exactly what I envisioned. It is beautifully designed. I only flipped through it, so I cannot attest to the in-depth quality just yet. At a glance, I would absolutely recommend it for children 5 years and up or an advanced 3 or 4 year old if you wanted to get them started early. How I plan to use this: As an introduction to dictionaries, I plan to explain to him what a dictionary is and skim through it with him- see if anything catches his eye. Then I'll explain how it works when we pick a specific picture, how the picture represents the word and then it provides an explanation of that word and then read him the sentence. After, (because the dictionary is limited to 1,000 words) I will suggest a short premade list of words that he can choose from and I will start to teach him how to look up words. I think this method can also be helped later on to introduce/reinforce 'alphabetical order'. I also might choose to have him copy the definition of the selected word because all definitions are captioned in short sentences, but it's just an idea if we want extra writing practice. Review: Engaging First Dictionary That Makes Learning Fun - This was a great buy for my 3-year-old. The book does a wonderful job introducing new words and simple meanings in a way that is easy for young children to understand. The pictures are colorful, clear, and very engaging, which helps keep my child interested during reading time. The layout is well organized and makes learning feel fun rather than overwhelming. It has quickly become one of our favorite books to read together and a great tool for early vocabulary development.

Perfect for 5 year old
This dictionary has basic words and all the words are explained in a very plain English which I like. I agree with some other reviewers who mentioned that it lacks some words that should be there, but as a first dictionary for my five year old, this is just working fine. My 21 month old also likes to read this dictionary (he is more into the pictures in the dictionary rather than words of course). I looked at a few other kids dictionaries at a bookstore and this one was the best.

Great!
Recommended age 5-9. My sons age 2. He LOVES it! We actively take a word each day and talk about it, find it, touch it, use it etc. He's so eager to find the word and image in the book, then connect it in real life. At his age this book is great fun, at 5-9 years of age this product must be a a wonderful reference book for kids to use without parental guidance. The images and text are clear and the content age appropriate. Another DK success.

I brought this when my daughter was entering 2nd grade. It's much suited for kindergarten to 2nd grade from my perspective. Some of my daughter's weekly spelling words were not in the book, however it was a great introduction dictionary for her to understand the logic's of how to use one.

Perfect for my 5-year old who is just starting to ...
Perfect for my 5-year old who is just starting to learn how to spell and read in kindergarten. I looked through almost all of the children's dictionaries available on Amazon before making a purchase. The big advantages of this dictionary is that it has a picture for EVERY word, so even children who can't read at all can find the right word. Most of the other so called "picture dictionaries" only had one picture a page and tones of words with text explanations only, which is useless for someone who can't read. It's easy and intuitive to use and build the habit of looking things up. The level of the word is also appropriate for early learners - granted it's mostly nouns, some verbs and small number of adjectives, but you won't need much more than that for kindergarten. The illustrations are pretty, to the point, and well picked photos. Also a generally pleasing book to look at.

Lebendig und anschaulich
Was erleichtert das Lernen von Vokabeln mehr als eine Illustration und ein typischer Beispielsatz? Beides spielt hier ideal zusammen!
