Gives a good depiction of East India Co trading in opium
I read this trilogy some years ago and made the mistake of passing on. Bought a new set to re-read and will be hanging on to these.

One of the best stories I've ever read. Couldn't put it down.
The events in this story you could see, hear and almost smell and of course laugh at.

Genius
An unputdownable trilogy which tells the stories of an interconnected web of individuals against the backdrop of The Opium Wars and British Imperialism. With a large cast of characters, as well as a subtle understanding of the personal motivations and the political machinations of major and minor players in a very human drama, Ghosh never allows us to forget the human, both in the tragic struggles of landless peasants and in the often tragi-comic misadventures of soldiers, farmers, merchants, chancers and princes. The trilogy has a Dickensian sweep and a Shakespearean depth whichnever disappoints. As a fictional treatment of imperialism masquerading as a civilising missionary vocation, it cannot be bettered. For me Ghosh's writing ranks with Rohinton Mistry's great novels A Fine Balance and Family Matters. Outstanding.
