How deep are these shelves?

These shelves measure 5 & 7/8 inches front-to-back, so, not very deep - this is a unit for a small space!

Is this paintable so it will match my espresso vanity?

It is not recommended paint this item. This product has been painted with varnish already. It is not sure if this rack is paintable with another new paint.Hope it helps.Wuppessen Customer Service

Would this still be sturdy without the middle shelf? It will fit well in my window and I would like to use it for houseplants.

I don't believe so. It is a very "delicate" unit and looks to be used best hanging on a wall (it has brackets on it for that purpose).
