Max Finds an Egg (Penguin Young Readers, Level 1) Kindle Edition

I really like these Penguin Young Readers. I open up a lot of the "Level 1" books, and I'm scratching my head, going, this is Level 1??? It seems like most other series contain lots of big words, and so many words per page that my son gets mentally exhausted after just a few pages. And somehow the story is still terrible!But these Penguin Young Readers are what I think of as a TRUE Level 1, for the kid who is just putting everything together and starting to read. It's such a great feeling for my little man to be able to read the whole book himself. Even though the story is simple, it was fun. My son laughed SO HARD when the little chick started running all over the house causing mischief. I also like the fact that this series has original stories, rather than just something canned about some cartoon characters that usually doesn't even have a story in there. I've already got about 4 of these Penguin Young Readers, and I'm going to go out and buy some more.

We have quite a few beginning reader books from Penguin Young Readers, Scholastic Kindergarten Kids, and I Can Read. They all have one, quite unfortunate, thing in common - the stories are a little dull.That said, this is one of has a possible dinosaur egg in it, which provides some suspense, a dramatic twist (spoiler alert: it's not a dinosaur egg Max found!), and the picture style is what I like to see in kids books - clear, simple, and not from clip-art... There's another one by the same author/illustrator duo  Max Has a Fish (Penguin Young Readers, L1) , and it's on our list.

The book was a present for my grandson. It was perfect for his age and an interestingly illustrated.

I love how the Penguin Young Readers not only have the Level 1, but they have the tiers for each level. We use these books all the time with our beginner reader, and the Max books are some of our favorites.

Good beginner reader

If you have a reluctant new reader who is also an animal lover, you can’t go wrong with this book! My son tore through it ( and we have tried SO MANY NEW READERS)!

Nice cute story. Appeals to anyone, but my kindergarten son especially enjoyed it.

Simple text and pictures suitable for new readers. Would have preferred the chick to be referred to as this rather than as a chicken but this aside it is a nice simple book which I'm happy with.
