Bilbo’s Last Song is considered by many to be Tolkien’s epilogue to his classic work The Lord of the Rings . As Bilbo Baggins takes his final voyage to the Undying Lands, he must say goodbye to Middle-earth. Poignant and lyrical, the song is both a longing to set forth on his ultimate journey and a tender farewell to friends left behind. Pauline Baynes’s jewel-like illustrations lushly depict both this final voyage and scenes from The Hobbit , as Bilbo remembers his first journey while he prepares for his last. Review: Great Book - Wonderful quality, pictures are incredible, a really good addition. Review: Awesome little book - This is a VERY short book, only a few pages long, but it's an endearing, sad, reflective little poem about Bilbo's thoughts on leaving Middle-Earth forever. It's wonderfully illustrated and makes both a great kids' book as well as a companion piece for anyone that's a LOTR/Tolkien fan. Inexpensive little book that's well worth it. Highly recommended.

A conclusion to the conclusion.
How do I even begin to review this? Because this is a book, technically, but what it really is, is a poem/song, told by Bilbo Baggins after the final chapter of The Lord of the Rings, in which he bids farewell. The poem/song itself is beautiful, and the illustrations are gorgeous and depict the adventures Bilbo had, from the start of his story in The Hobbit, to his parting of Middle-Earth in Lord of the Rings, and it brought back many pleasant memories from The Hobbit so see them. It's not something I'd consider fundamentally important to read, but if you do, read it immediately after finishing The Lord of the Rings, as it's a conclusion to the conclusion. It's not overly important, so I can't give it more than a low 3 stars, but it was lovely!

Much shorter than I expected
Though it's much shorter than I expected I still needed to have it for my Tolkien collection. Chris did an incredible job editing the massive amount of manuscripts left behind by his father.

The perfect epilogue does not exist... Wait, I found it!
This beautifully illustrated book is the perfect gift for anyone who loves Middle-earth. It is a short poem illustrated by Pauline Baynes that takes you through Bilbo's amazing journey's end as it sings Bilbo's last farewell to the beautiful world weaved by Tolkien himself. It is easy to read and hard to forget. Get this short book even if you know nothing about Tolkien. You wont regret it.

An Incredibly Beautiful Poem
An absolutely astonishing poem. I rarely cry when I read poetry (not because I am not moved by it; it's just not my normal reaction), but I did with this one. One gets a real sense of what goes through the mind of a person (or Hobbit) when the finality of death is before them, but the fear of its coming has passed. As a somewhat young person (I'm in college), I found it immensely comforting in its outlook on the end of one's life. We spend much of our life being afraid of death, but perhaps it is not until it stands before us that we learn of its beauty. The poem is not an argument against a long and happy life of course, but so much of our modern view of death is that it is the end and nothing more. Tolkien's Christianity shines through here, swallowed into the fabric of the narrative. It is not a Christian poem, but it is an inescapably Christian work, written by a Christian and from that perspective. Much like Tolkien's other works, death is not a bad thing, but a gift; a rest. Weary of the world, yet still appreciating all of the beauty within it and all that will be left behind, the ship is eagerly boarded, perhaps with one final look back, but also with the knowledge that greater beauty lies in wait. This book is well worth it. While it is short, it is a perfect book for the bedside, and one that will benefit from continued reading, particularly to see how one's view of its themes changes over time. It is perhaps a little expensive based on the quantity of its content, but the quality is where the value lies. Even if you do not buy this book it is well worth it to at least seek out the poem and read it.

“Fim do dia, a vista turvada, à minha frente uma longa jornada. Adeus, amigos!
