CoolTerra Biochar Soil Improvement is a 10-quart eco-friendly solution designed to permanently enhance poor soils. It improves water retention, increases nutrient holding capacity, and promotes beneficial microbial life, all while improving soil aeration and structure.

## Description

Product Description CoolTerra is a multi-functional soil amendment for enhancing plant and soil vitality with applications in horticulture, turf and landscape, viticulture, row crops, fruit and nut trees, and composting. CoolTerra is highly porous acting like a sponge to retain water and nutrients at a plants root zone, increasing water use efficiency and reducing the need for fertilizer. Its pore structure and chemistry provides surfaces where beneficial soil microbes can attach and flourish. Enhancing the microbe population in the soil increases the ability of the plant to uptake nutrients, resulting in larger and healthier plants. CoolTerra helps reverse climate change by taking CO2 captured by plants from the atmosphere and storing it in the soil underground. For every ton of CoolTerra placed into the soil, 3 tons of atmospheric CO2 is sequestered. Not intended for sale in California. brand_description CoolTerra Biochar Soil Improvement retains moisture and nutrients, increases plant growth and vitality, reduces water use and irrigation requirements, and builds drought resistance in turf, lawn, garden, and other commercial applications.

Review: My plants seem to like it, and I'm not likely to make my own biochar, so.... - I recently read in an article that you can dig a ditch, put all of your weeds in it and burn them (check state laws, obviously), and make your own biochar. I bought this biochar before I knew what it was and that it's possible to make your own, although I'm honestly not sure if I would make my own biochar. I incorporated this biochar into all of my container gardens and my plants are growing well. I also amended with plant-appropriate fertilizers, and used coconut coir; we'll see how it all goes. So far, everything is growing exceptionally well, so I'm optimistic. This biochar is easy to dispense - poke the perforated hole in the side and pull out the top of the clear plastic bag and start sprinkling. I do think it would be helpful to have more details about how much is appropriate to incorporate into a container garden.
Review: Worth the price. - So far so good. I met a CoolTerra sales rep named Peter at an event. The ratio he recommends is 1:4. One part Biochar to 4 parts soil. He also said to concentrate the product in the top 4 inches of soil. He also said that the product does not breakdown so this will not need to be replenished. This drought is stressing our plants. By using the CoolTerra and shade cloth we are getting a handle on water conservation in our semi arid area in Ventura County California. We have raised beds. I bought 50 pound bags of the CoolTerra. I used about half a bag in a 4x4 foot raised bed. No more adding peat moss or vermiculite or perlite ever again.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: For best water savings, how much Biochar is needed per 100 square feet of lawn?**
A: Typically, one box of CoolTerra™ per 100 square feet of lawn or garden area will adequately repair and improve most soil. Controlled lab studies and real-world applications show both water holding capacity and availability are significantly improved by an initial application. Further, cumulative refinement of soil can be achieved by additional applications. Typically very sandy soils or heavy compacted clay soils benefit from two boxes per 100 square feet. Just like with eating healthy leafy green vegetables, the exact proportion isn't as important as whether or not they are included in your diet.

**Q: Does this work in hydroponic systems?**
A: It will work in hydroponics if it are Peat based. No other data is available at this time.

**Q: How much Biochar should be used for a garden in sandy conditions? The description doesn't say how many square feet a box covers.**
A: "Outdoor Flower & Vegetable Gardens":Apply to the top 3 to 4 inches of soil around each plant at a ratio of one partCoolTerra™ to four parts soil, with more product applied for larger plants like tomatoes. Apply more CoolTerra™ to sandy or heavy clay soils. So, for sandy soil a box will do about 50 sq. ft.

**Q: Will Biochar breakdown clay soil?**
A: Biochar benefits vary according to how it is made and what is used to make it. In general, it is thought that it can provide aeration to clay soils which will then provide space in the soil for beneficial microbes to develop, but the biochar itself is not depleted by this beneficial process. Biochar is thought to have both short term and long term benefits for the soil. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works great for terrariums
*by J***B on February 5, 2016*

I use this for making terrariums (to cut down on the smell) below the soil line. My only wish is for the inside plastic bag to seal after each use.
