I tried this mic with an amp and no sound came out...it worked with other mics just fine....how do you turn it on?

This is a dynamic microphone, not a condenser. It does not need phantom power but it's a professional 600ohm mic, the impedance won't match with a guitar input socket plus the mic voltage output is too low to drive a guitar socket. You need a microphone preamp to boost the signal. If you have a dedicated mic socket in your amp this should work because a mic preamp is built in.

What range does this microphone work in

If by range you mean the distance it picks up sound from then you have to be fairly close. Dynamic mics are designed for sound isolation (which is why they are ideal live). For that reason they do not pick up much if any background noise. If you are more than a few feet from the mic. you will be faint. 20 feet away probably inaudible. Less than a foot away will be fine. These mics are very tough you can sing or play right into them and they will not damage. They can be used up close to a guitar amp or kick drum and vocalists and horn players can sing right into them for a proximity effect. The cardiode pattern also means that the pick up area is just in front of the mic & very slightly to each side. If you go behind it or much to either side it will barely pick up.
