This utility knife lasted 20 months - hence the limited lifespan. During the 20 months of use - heavy use somedays - cutting carpet into carpet squares, light use other days - downsizing cardboard boxes for recycling, etc. the utility knife held up well. The knife body is not metal. Some type of metallic alloy - very light weight. The blade slide mechanism IS PLASTIC. This component is the weak link. The slide in my knife broke rendering the blade useless.Upside - inexpensiveUpside - usefulDownside - the plastic blade slide mechanism.
