Good learning toy
I bought this for my son who will be 3 in a few months. I know that the product says 4 and up but he already knows all of his colors, shapes, letters and numbers so I felt that he would be able to use the Tag longer than the Tag junior. After comparing them I really felt that the more advanced parts of the Tag junior can be down with the Tag. The biggest difference is the device that you use on the books. I think that the kids will have to be careful with the pen tip because it is small it may break.... mine hasn't yet and my son can be a little rough with things. :-) He understands to point to the different pictures to make them talk and to point to the purple circle that will read the whole page. We played with the demo that Leapfrog has on their website and he really loved repeating all the words that the computer said so I knew that he would like it. They have a few videos of the Tag Junior there as well so you can see a comparison.

Fun for the kids but the battery cover is bad
We bought 2 of these, one for my 4 year old and one for my 6 year old. They love them and they have been a great purchase for Christmas. They have played the longest with these than any other toy we've bought in the past. I like them also and are fun to bring the book alive. My only complaint is trying to get the battery cover off. The 'screw' is plastic and you have to push down. If the screw driver is too thin then it strips the top of the plastic screw so it is harder to take off the next time. The design could have been better and I think the next time I replace the batteries I'll need to replace the cover as well. The directions say "push down and turn using a screw driver, coin or other household object". Well I used a penny as well with not much luck. Be warned of this pens flaws.Other than the battery cover I would highly recommend this.

Love the Tag
I got the Tag reading system for my 3 1/2 year old daughter for Christmas. I was torn between buying her the Tag Jr and the Tag. She ended up LOVING the tag system and received 5 Tag books for Christmas as well. She figured out how to use it very quickly and read for over an hour when she first received it. The game (The Stars on the pages) are a little more advanced for her and I have to help her sometimes with those, which is nice since she has something to "grown into".This product is VERY educational and I think my daughter will continue to use it for years to come. It is also great for long car rides, which we take on a regular basis. It is also very durable - The "pen" has been dropped many times in the car and there are no signs of wear or tear. I highly recommend the plastic case to keep the books and Tag in as well. It comes in very handy and my daughter thinks she is really cool carrying it around :).Highly Recommend.

not what i expected
i bought this beacause my son loves anything electronic and is starting to read. but i would not have bought it if i had known that the books had little games in them. what a waste of my time and money! who ever decided to add games was an idiot! because there are games my son wanted nothing to do with the reading part. i sure thought it was called tag reading system, not tag game system. if i wanted games i would have bought something else. i am sending it back

Really bad idea
I purchased this toy for my granddaughter at christmas. I beleived the toy would encourage her to read since she loves books. All this toy has done is discourage her love of reading. She refuses to take the toy out of her backpack. She has told me that the toy never works right and does not read the books. I had her bring the toy to me last week. I tried to use the systtem and could not get it to work. I have contacted Leapfrog regarding the pen. I was told to clean the lens. I did as instructed but the pen does not work. Numerous people are complaining about the same thing. I have asked Leapfrog for a refund of my money and I am waiting for their reply.

TAG - NOT WHAT I THOUGHT
OK. so I thought this would read to you each word as you scanned over it, thereby helping you decode each word. This is just another version of a book on tape/cd. Every picture is magnetized so you get some fluff, but I thought the kids had more control - like you could let it read to you page by page or you could let it read to you word by word where you'd be more in control. Haven't explored the games yet..... Great for the car, would see benefit to having headphones with it. BUT would have saved my money if I investigated what this was really all about....

My 4 year old loves this
I bought this for my 5 year old daughter for Christmas 2009 and she can't get enough of it. She can literally spend hours sitting in her room listening to every single sound on every single page. And she enjoys playing the games over and over again. She also likes to touch each word individually and hear how they are pronounced, so I think this is a great learning tool.We used to have the old leap frog system with the crappy paper spiral books. These are so much better. You get actual hardback books. So even if you don't use the leapfrog pen, you still have a nice book to put on your shelf. And there are some good books in the series, including two Dr. Seuss classics.I don't really have any complaints about this system. The pen might be easy to lose if you don't store it somewhere when the kids are done with it. I also hope that they release more "classic" books instead of just activity books.

Kids will not get bored with this toy!
This toy is amazing! My 6 year old daughter spends a lot of time playing with her tag,and she is also learning at the same time. She has even read some of the pages to me,word for word. She has only had it for 5 days, and im not sure if she has honestly learned the words or just memorized how the story goes. But either way,im very satisfied with this product.Every single thing on the pages interacts with your child in some way.It is also nice that you can go online and track what they are learning. One downfall is that it eats batteries. The first batch died yesterday, which would have been after 4 days of regular use.But it really doesnt matter,I plan to buy as many as it needs because it keeps her entertained, and is educational. You should definetly buy more books to go with it as well,I bought 3 and this seems to give her enough of an assortment to keep her happy.Planning on buying many more in the future.

offers both the pen and the book
This set offers both the "magic" pen which activates explanations and actions in the special Leapfrog books, and a copy of Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat. Other Leapfrog systems appear to offer only the pen, with samples from some of the books -- sales devices really -- at about the same price. I bought it so that my 6 year old grand-daughter would enjoy reading on her own and keep reading even when she hit words she didn't know -- the pen offering help and explanations in an entertaining form. However the books are overwhelmingly Disney-princess type or from films the children saw a few years ago ("Brave" being a happy exception). Also they seem pretty basic and not for children who have been in school for a couple of years. Nice idea but needs more advanced execution.
