Are you a lesbian if you are in love with a woman?
Ms. MacGregor has written a thought-provoking page-turner that is really two stories in one. The first tells the painful story of a family trying to recover from a worst-possible scenario. An unimaginable situation disrupts every aspect of the comfortable life they were all enjoying. This stresses every member of the family and intra-family relationships are strained to the breaking point. Will the family recover? Do they even know what recovery looks like? Feels like? Is it even possible? The second story is a woman-mother-widow approaching her 50's trying to keep her life and family together and to help them find their "new normal". Along the way she makes a friend who is a lesbian. Friendship builds and flirtation begins. Instead of being put off by the flirting, she is attacted to it. Never in her life has she ever had a single sexual thought about another woman but as a moth is drawn to the flame, she moves forward into a woman-to-woman relationship. Now the question: is she a lesbian? Is she bi-sexual? Or, is she just a woman in love? This is a quality read. The author really makes you think about both story lines as they progress in the book. I have now read it twice and I am still thinking about the questions the author asks the reader. And, I still don't know. It is maddeningly wonderful to be so intellectually challenged by the author. On a personal note, I started reading this author years ago and could hardly wait for her next title. Then, I dunno, she lost her spark and the resulting books were mediocre. I am delighted to note that "KG MacGregor is back" as this book is simply great. It will remain in my permanent collection.Great story. Compelling characters. Fascinating look at "the other side of the headlines". And, one helluva love story. Yep, that's worth five stars. Well done Ms. MacGregor, well done.

Great love story
This was a great story about a woman figuring out who she was. I didn't particularly like the bashing of conservatives, stereotyping them as haters, because from where I'm sitting it's the liberals who hate on the conservatives. Not all conservatives are against 'gays'. Some of us are gay/lesbian/whatever you want to call it. Some of us are Christian and lesbian and conservative. Sometimes we grow up straight because we didn't know any different even though we've been gay since high school and didn't know what to call it. It was the 80s after all.I did like the characters. Ellis was great and relatable, at least the married part.I'm actually kind of gender fluid and a sort of homoflexible lesbian who's married to a man, but I really dig your characters and the stories that make them seem like real people.

Very Enjoyable
KG MacGregor really knows how to introduce an interesting plot twist. The drama and angst was well done. And love things worked out between the two women.

I know I would read this particular book again as I do not read book a second time. I was taken in when I just thought I would just sit down and just get the flavor of the book and when I looked up, it was an hour later. I was hooked on the characters and waiting to find out when the she would find out her best friend her whole life was the one she was truly in love with. It was truly a winner!!

Loved the book
The author created a time line that really developed well. The story line led up to Ellis having to move to Sacramento because of the heavy burden she had to bear dealing with very heavy losses from her previous life. Summer had dealt with losses of her own. Their friendship developed to a point where it became more than a friendship. It was a very good book and I did not want to put it down. Very well done!

I really enjoyed this book
I really enjoyed this book! The author takes the time to develop each character so you can understand what each of them are thinking/feeling. The story flowed throughout the whole book, no slow parts....there was one twist that I totally was not expecting and changed the direction of the story completely...but I think it made the story flow that much better. Great read, would definitely recommend it.

Not my favorite of KG's books
Not my favorite of KG's books. I struggled to finish it, but it had a good message that love defies labels. However, I did like the way KG handled the delicate topic affecting her main character. Very difficult indeed and sadly, in the news a lot now a days, yet I've never thought of what happens to the families later. Thank you for that.

Characters needed "more meat on the bone"
More character development needed. The characters were just not fleshed out. Had hoped for more

A slow-growing relationship nicely done
As usual MacGregor writes a well-crafted and believable story with 'real' feeling characters. Summer is lovely and so obviously the best person for Ellis but it takes Ellis some time to reach that conclusion. Both have their own ‘issues’; Summer trying to unshackle herself from a toxic former relationship and Ellis doing much the same (but for entirely different reasons – I won’t spoil things but saying what). Some readers may be frustrated by Ellis’ constant insistence on putting her almost adult and adult children first but given what they have gone through as a family that is fairly understandable. As is often the case in MacGregor’s books, there isn’t a hearts and flowers happy ending and you can see there will be troubles ahead, but you have the sense at the end of the book that Summer and Ellis’ relationship will weather them. Didn’t knock my socks off but a pleasant read nevertheless

Thought provoking
I really liked the premise of the story, as usual a real life story from this author, makes you think. Good characters but it really ended a bit abruptly for my liking. But I am a sucker for epilogues so trying not to mind!

An Excellent Read
I absolutely loved this book. I've read a few KG MacGregor's previously and liked them but I really loved this one. We'll developed characters, an interesting storyline and also lovely to see older characters finding love for a change. I'd love to see a sequel to this one.
