Broken Threads: Purchased at Amazon.com
A different type of book about a fashion industry I never thought of before. Broken Threads tells the story of destroying the Jewish fashion industry in Germany and Austria. Until I read this book, I never realized just how many Jewish people were involved in the fashion industry in both countries. A very sad commentary showing that the Nazi's would stop at nothing to eliminate the Jews. Even though some of the businesses were Aryanized, Germany and Austria mostly did with out the successful fashion industry. In my other reading I've seen some of what you were supposed to wear to be a good German frau in the 1930's and 40's. Quite laughable. Also, no makeup. Hitler frowned on it. Although I liked this book, I gave it three stars only because in some ways it seemed to skim the surface. I would have gotten more out of a book that maybe focused on one of two Jewish people who lost their business, such as Nathan Israel, the owner of a large German department store. I did learn a lot though and it was a good read.

Interesting, An Area Not Often Covered
The Jewish nature of the Berlin fashion world, and department stores is not as frequently discussed as it could be,The book is slim, and I'd appreciate even more details, but all in all, worth your time. How quickly and thoroughly this world was destroyed is not surprising, but very sad, indeed.

Fascinating untold history
Excellent book on the fashion/garment industry in Germany and Austria starting with biblical times through the '20's and culminating in its destruction during the Nazi era. Essays from international scholars with expertise in the subject enable readers to fully understand the "Arayanzation "of an entire industry . Amazing photographs and incredible research abound.

nice illustrations
This is a slender piece of academic research into a fascinating field of social history. Wish had been longer and broader.

Easy Read on a Little Known Subject
I received this book as a gift after my friend saw me reading Nazi Chic. I wish I had found this book BEFORE Nazi Chic! Broken Threads is a quick, easy read accompanied by loads of pictures. The book is a series of essays that cover the history of the Jews in the fashion industry, from Biblical times through the Second World War. Covers the history of the department store, a little bit about World War I and the 1920s, with its main focus being on WWII.If you're interested in this topic, I highly recommend this above Nazi Chic. Nazi Chic is dense scholarly work, with pictures in a small mid-section. This book is for a broader audience, and in many respects more helpful.

interesting material, in dire need of editing
This collection of research is interesting and important, if poorly written. Grammar and spelling are fine but wordy and repetitive sentences make for tedious reading.
