Proof that Hockey is the most important thing in all space and time
This is the greatest hockey movie ever made, and one of the greatest stories in all the annals of human history. The fights were good, too. Exceptional to watch St. John's get humiliated, which is generally the theme of the very thing that is St. John's. Bonus points for the two guys being force multipliers for each other, and thus helping LaFlamme reach his greatness and truly become a hockey player. The purity of Doug as a hockey player is the single most important piece. Being a hockey player is like sainthood. LaFlamme was nearly a fallen angel, and Doug's hockey "stomach light" came to make the "resurrection" of the Flame.Of course, being Massachusetts people, Doug was true in every way. Reaching as deep as your can into the very bowels of the annals of history, hockey prevails as the most significant topic of this epoch in space and time.

Best Hockey Movie Of All TIme
I liked Slapshot, but this is better--all because of Sean William Scott's brilliant comic performance. Jay Baruchel was very funny as Scott's friend. I smiled and laughed the whole time. Poetic scenes of teeth flying in the air. Great comedy.

Simple, realistic, and funny, what else do you need?
I guess there's not enough time to list all of the reasons why I love this movie so much. so I shall summarize it in one word: simplicity. The first five minutes are more than enough to get you in context and understand what's going on: a not-so-bright bouncer with unsupportive parents (and with a clear preference towards his doctor brother) realizes he doesn't have "a thing" (as he calls it) and finds purpose and meaning in his life by joining a local hockey team. When the story begins to develop, we can observe the protagonist's (Doug "The Thug" Glatt) growth as both a hockey player and as a person, but always keeping it to the ground. Doug eventually moves to the minor leagues to a team that is struggling to make it to the playoffs, where his role is to protect the star player who has fallen from grace after an unfortunate encounter with the movie's antagonist (Ross "The Boss" Rhea). I love how the movie manages to be exaggeradtely funny and violent yet still realistic and relatable. There are no unnecessary flashbacks of chilhood dreams nor slow-motion suspenseful shots. There are no championship curses nor the pursuit of glory at the highest level. It all comes down to a group of average Joe's who are struggling to make it to the playoffs. The team members are very easy to relate to and the locker room scenes are memorable (best motivational pre-final-game-speech I've seen on a movie). In addition, there are other topics such as romance, family relationships, friendship and search for identity that are both accurately and briefly addressed. Most of the time is used for action, so there are no time-wasters during the film.If to all of the mentioned above we add the acting (Liev Schreiber's performance is brilliant and the diner scene is the perfect example), the soundtrack, the characters, and the well-kept pace, we can easily say we are in front of a truly hidden gem.

Hockey fan writes hockey fan movie.
Jay Baruchel not only plays the raunchy best friend in this amazing tribute to the enforcers of this sport, but he helped write the script. Even though the tribute is to these unsung heroes, the subtleties of sportsmanship, teamwork, bromance, and even love do not go unnoticed. Seann William Scott gives my personal favorite performance of his, and delivers a relatable character that you can't help but fully get behind, through his struggles on and off the ice. Oh, and Liev Schreiber, Kim Coates, Alison Pill, the list goes on and on folks. Add on the fact that a real person, Doug Smith, inspired this story only drives the last nail home for a cult-classic homerun.

Surprise Comedy of the Year!
Seann William Scott plays against type and is quite excellent in playing the dumb but loveable hero of the movie, Doug Glatt. Doug is trying to find a purpose in his life that does not include being a security guard. He does not have the smarts like his brother or parents do. However, he can deliver and take punches which is catches the eye of a local hockey team. They bring him in to be a "Goon", an enforcer on the ice to protect the other guys on the team. He eventually moves to upper league and soon has to see if he can be more than a Goon, but maybe a real hockey player. All this is going while also dealing with his parent's disapproval of violence, courting Alison Pill's character, and protecting his team's star player from getting injured. Not to mention having to eventually face Ross Rhea, hockey's head enforcer on the ice. This all leads to some very funny scenes by the characters written by Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg. The movie moves at quick pace and is clocked close to 90 minutes. It is not a great film as there are some very silly moments where some things are rushed along to get the plot going and characters that were good only get a small amount of time. The Russian players on the team are pretty humorous when they give their goalie a hard time.Overall, this movie went under the radar at the box office, which is a shame. The movie should be seen because it is a very good sports comedy. Maybe the best since The Might Ducks came out.

Hidden Gem
I, like another reviewer bought this blu ray for my boyfriend's birthday. He had been going on (and on and on) about watching this film, purely because he liked the cover. So I ordered it as a present, and I'm so glad I did! This film is hilarious from start to finish. Seann William Scott is at his comedic best and is more lovable than ever. Trying out to be a pro hockey player without being able to skate, trying so hard to get his teammates to like him and to make his adoptive parents proud. It's all really funny stuff but it's done in such a way that you just can't help liking him more and more. I must admit that the best part for me was the very brief appearance (so brief that they are not even credited) of Ricky and Julian from the Trailer Park Boys! It was such a shock to see them in the film but that alone made it worth every penny for me. One thing I found very interesting was the fact that this film is actually based on a true story. At the end credits you can see footage of the guy this film is based on, fighting on the ice and after with black eyes, a cut lip and bruises all over his face. He was never actually with a hockey team to play hockey, just to get into fights! An interesting career choice to say the least. The picture and sound quality of the blu ray itself are excellent and there are some great special features.I really can't recommend this film enough. It's an instant feel good film full of love and laughs that I could happily watch again and again. Please give it a go!!!

Great movie
Goon - the film I saw advertised a couple years back and thought looked impossibly and dissapointingly average. And it wasn't until i was actually advised by a friend of it's brilliance and me then purchasing it that I found out it is far from average. Goon isn't what you think it is, it is basically a film about a 'dim' bouncer that doesn't seem to feel pain, and can put almost any man to the ground with ease. Without ruining the story; Doug Glatt goes on a journey through the Ice Hockey league, going from rags to riches from his talent of being impossibly tough. The thing that made this film better than average was basically Scott's performance. He does a fantastic job and plays the part well, and brings a some-what heart-warming vibe to the viewer. The only niggles I have about the film is firstly the editing - I don't think there was many if any scenes that exceded 5 seconds, it felt rushed. The writing; whereas the story itself is different and enjoyable, alot of the dialogue is just boring, especially scenes where Doug talks at the level of an 8 year old - it just doesn't look right. Aside from these slight problems, it's a great film to just chill out and watch, there's violence, there's love, and there's connection to the film, a good watch.

Sean William Scott's softer side
Sean William Scott - an actor famous for playing idiots (no offense, Sean). Here, in `Goon' he plays a bouncer called Doug Glatt - not your stereotypical `touchy-feely' type, so, true to form, he takes a job that basically requires hitting people (albeit while playing ice hockey) because it's just about the only thing he's any good at.It would be so easy to class Doug Glatt as a thug - spending his days constantly attacking rival ice hockey teams. However, for some reason, he also comes across as quite a vulnerable character. He freely admits to not being a genius - fighting being the only thing he was ever good at. He constantly lives in the shadow of his - highly intelligent - brother and, as a result, is slightly looked down upon from his father. It's these qualities that allow us to feel some sympathy for a man who is always knocking other men's teeth out.Don't expect one of Sean William Scott's typical wacky American Pie type comedies - it's more of a drama, but with the odd humorous moment courtesy of the predicaments Glatt finds himself in.Worth a watch, even if Stiffler's `softer side' does involves punching people's lights out.

It's ice hockey, Jim, but not as we know it.
First impressions: noisy, violent, blood-soaked, foul-mouthed. Also funny and fast-moving. I couldn't hear all the dialogue. I bought it because I am a Liev Schreiber fan. I think all the actors and/or skaters did well, that's why I gave it 4 stars. The film is partially fact-based, mostly a story about hockey bruisers beating each other up. There's not much hockey, what there is is filmed in short spurts so you can't follow the action. A rather sweet little love story runs parallel to the main. I am a skater, and I think that British ice hockey is not so violent. I support the Army/Navy/Marines teams, and they would not be allowed to get away with the bad behaviour in this film. It's quite enjoyable though.

Never heard of it but....
Had no idea this film existed until I ran into it here. I'm not a die hard ice hockey fan and bought it simply because it sounded different. That it was, refreshingly different from anything I've seen recently, and very entertaining too. Whilst Ice Hockey is the theme of the film, the story concentrates more on the players in the team and the way they interact, plus of course the main focus of the film is the fighting that erupts between the 'goons' on the ice. Worth a few quid to see some good old fisticuffs and plenty of blood splatter.
