I intentionally waited six months before reviewing this product, because I had seen some negative reviews regarding wear and tear. I put the TaoTronics leash to the test. I walk and run with a very active and inquisitive pit bull mix about three miles per day, so I have put over five hundred miles on this leash, and my daughter has probably put another two hundred. There is no wear visible on the leash ribbon apart from a very small number of loose fibers. The only wear at all is a spot on the handle (shown in the picture) where my thumb has worn through a patch of rubber. This amount of wear seems entirely reasonable to me, as I went through three similar leashes which all had catastrophic mechanical failures within three months. Given the complete lack of evidence of any mechanical wear, I would expect this leash to last me at least another year and a half, and quite possibly longer.

After 4 weeks of using it, the retraction mechanism suddenly jammed and it has not been possible to free it up. The leash is about 50% extended and there is no way to move it either in or out regardless of what I have tried.Update: After posting this review, the manufacturer posted that they would take care of it but nothing happened until I found them through Google and called them. They looked up the order and reaffirmed me that they would send out a replacement within 10-15 business days. 45 days later, still nothing has happened.I understand that things can happen but the obfuscation and failure to live up to their promises - after confirming my mailing address - is a really bad sign.Update: A year later still nothing has happened - stay away from this leash it is a piece of junk

I will never buy a pet store leash again. This is twice as durable at half the price. Very strong with no tangle leash. After having several $30 leashes break I am very happy with this one.

My dog loves this leash. He gets very excited when he knows that we are about to go for a stroll. This product is very well made. The only problem that I have encounter, this being the 2nd TaoTronics Retractable that I've purchased over the last 2 years, is that after being used twice daily for a year, the CLICKER on the leash is not as durable as I wish it could be. Now, it never has popped out of position, I lost a dog due to a PETSMART Brand, Top Paws leash, popping out of place, anyways. this is only a minor caveat, pet peeve that I have with this TaoTronics leash. Otherwise, its durable, reliable, and my dog just loves it. If you walk your dog twice a day like I do, then invest in this retractable leash by TaoTronics.

I wrote a fairly unsatisfactory review. The latch never worked right from the first moment so I only gave it 3 stars. Except for the latch, every thing else rated 5 stars. What I finally did was take the ribbon back thru the handle before attaching to collar, and adjust the length of the ribbon by hand (dog next to my knee, about 8 feet, full length). Surprisingly, the ribbon length would hold without being latched (all is not lost if the plastic "gears" strip as in some reviews of all brands). But the new one is really nice. I like the engineering, the ergonomics (it's designed to just dangle down from your fingers), the strong ribbon, the heavy duty casing. The seller read my review that same day, contacted me the next day, and sent me a new leash without question. It arrived a couple of days later. I've only used it a couple of times but no latch problems.

My dog is a very enthusiastic 80lb lab who pulls very hard on a fixed-length leash. I had a recent spine injury, and I was worried he might injure me again by pulling on the leash. We both love this leash. He loves having a little more space to explore, and I love that he doesn't pull as hard because he has more room to wander. The thumb locking and retracting mechanism is easy and intuitive, and the leash and clip are very strong despite looking somewhat thin. I was skeptical at first about buying a this leash because it's less expensive than the high-quality one my in-laws use for their dog. But this one so far has the same quality for a better price. I would definitely recommend this leash.

Pretty good. I bought it for my husky. She pulls a lot and I thought let's give her some freedom and get a longer leash. I was looking for something strong where she cannot break and long. I was looking for 20 ft but this works fine. And it's pretty good. It looks like it's will do the job. It is heavy and the actual leash looks strong. But week see. I have used it for 2 walks. One of which had a rabbit incident and she started pulling and it was pretty durable.

This leash is FANTASTIC! My previous retractable leash was fine, I thought, until I started using this leash. This leash is very sturdy and well-made and was designed with purpose.First, the retractable part is made of a thick, heavy-duty material, like a band, instead of a little cord like my previous leash. I used to worry at times that the cord would snap when my dog would suddenly lunge. Don't have to worry about that now.Second, my dog likes to sniff around trees and bushes. Inevitably, the previous little cord would get snagged on a branch or the bark of a tree and I would have to untangled it. It was infuriating. Haven't had that issue with this leash.Next, it feels nice and natural in the hand.And finally, I like that the leash retracts on the top of the leash instead of the end. Not sure why, but it seems like it gives me a little more control. In addition, it seems to make for a smoother retraction.Highly recommended!

Broken after 6 weeks. Apparently my 25kg doggy must be a bulldozer. The lead doesn’t seems to be fixable as the case doesn’t open.

Good product.

Have had for several months now and does a great job with a 50lb Staffordshire Bull Terrier on the other end. Not as expensive as the Kong retractables or other name brands in stores but holds up as well, if not better, than they have. I do wish the clasp for attaching to the collar/harness was a little bigger and the lock button feels loose & un-sturdy, but has been a great product so far. Will purchase again if need arises.

Was worried about how well the lock would work with a larger dog, but so far it has been holding up fantastic!
