An excellent reference book for designers and sewists
This book is great. Firstly, the illustrations are beautiful - please note that these are not photographs like some other books, but rendered art. This however makes it easy to understand, and not be distracted by the photography. This book contains so many fashion details - different eras such as the 50's and 30's and some typical features, the visual effects of using the bias, hemlines, straps, frills, ruffles... and the best bit - it helps you draw them better to present to clients/professors. This is great if you are trying to improve in this area as it has very professional illustrations that you can analyze to understand how and why they have been presented in such a way so that you can apply it to your own illustrations to make your details look better (e.g. ruffles, cuffs, etc)As a designer I find this inspirational and a great reference book for considering details. It does not cover construction, pattern making or anything else other than illustrations of different styles. But that it does exceptionally well and very thoroughly. A great addition to a personal library.

Mostly Disappointed
Generally speaking, I wasn't impressed with this book. It's a collection of fashion sketches that illustrate a variety of design details, everything from gathers and pleats to collars and belts. There were a few sketches of "historical" dresses, but the majority of these were rendered with modern hair and styling, so they didn't look like they were from the 1920s or 1950s, they just looked frumpy.Speaking of frumpy, a lot of the styles shown were surprisingly dated, considering the book was first published in 2008. They looked like late-80s/early90s . . . and not in a good, "Oh, that was cool, we should bring that back," way, but more like, "Gah, what were we thinking? Hide the photo albums!" In other words, it didn't inspire me to design great things, but made me cringe, instead. The illustrations were okay. Some were hand-drawn images, made with colored pencils. Not exactly sophisticated, but passable. Others were computer-drawn flats, which looked a lot better, except they were all black-and-white. Some even had giant pixel dots in them, as if they had been enlarged. It gave me a headache to look at them.If you're a student of fashion design, you'll probably want this book, just to round out your collection. If you're looking for tips on how to draw fashion sketches, try Contemporary Fashion Illustration Techniques or Fashion Illustration for Designers . If you need design ideas, you might try The Fashion Designer's Directory of Shape and Style: Over 500 Mix-and-Match Elements for Creative Clothing Design . I was looking for both inspiration and drawing tips, so I was mostly disappointed.

Not what I was hoping for
I was hoping this would give a lot more info and examples. My boyfriend has an online eBay store and he sells a lot of used clothing items. I was hoping this book would be more detailed and give more examples of different kinds of dresses, all the different necklines, sleeve types... Things like that. Although this book does touch on these areas, it didn't give a lot of examples and whatnot. I was definitely disappointed.

According to how this book is presented, I expected more practical information about how to sew some details of garments and not just drawings.
