Bought this because Harry Styles is playing the lead role in the movie adaption of this book. I tried finding it at a few stores but didn’t have any luck so I came to Amazon. Came in perfect condition and they even put a bookmark in with the package. Can’t wait to read!

I got this book because Harry Styles is going to be in the movie. Wasn't to interested because the plot seamed kinda predictable but let me tell you this, the book is everything but predictable! Its fantastic! I didn't want it to end! It's one of my favorite books now.

Bought this because of Harry Styles. I actually really like the story. Beautifully written complicated love story.

I’m not gonna lie some parts did get me mad and frustrated but I guess that’s what makes the book more intriguing, overall it’s definitely a 9/10 because the writing is simply really good and the ending is truly beautiful it brings tears to your eyes!

Many people have started reading My Policeman due primarily to the Harry Styles film connection, unfortunately, the book has a tremendous amount of flaws. The story centers around a love triangle between Tom (the policeman played by Harry), and two people who are madly in love with him. Patrick, an older museum curator, and Marion, a grade school teacher. The problem is that until 1967 homosexuality was a crime in the UK and scores of men ended up serving prison time for their sexual orientation.The contrivance is that the story is told through Patrick’s journal entries and a ‘manuscript’ that Marion has decided to write, in part to confess her misdeeds. The book itself has two timelines, one is the events of 1957-1959 and the other is 1999 and strictly Marion’s point of view.The decision of the author to have the 1999 timeline is where the wheels fall off because it brings up the multitude of questions about what happened during those intervening 40 years.Spoilers ahead.Tom becomes a policeman in 1957, gets married to Marion in 1958, and leaves the police force when Patrick is arrested in 1959. So, he’s a policeman for less than 3 years and becomes a security guard for the rest of his career?Patrick was in jail and was released in August of 1959 according to what he told the prison psychiatrist. He had been fired from the museum. Surely he would have gotten back together with Tom once he knew that Tom was no longer a cop. When homosexuality was decriminalized in 1967 there would be no reason for them not to communicate...so what did Patrick do for 40 years?Of the two narratives, Patrick’s is more engaging. Marion comes off as cloying, clinging, and vindictive. Shouldn’t we have read what Tom was thinking? (That would have been an interesting book)What happened to the portrait? Patrick is drawing Tom for weeks and no one even sees the results? It’s never mentioned.Patrick had money. Wouldn’t he have left his estate to Tom if he had no one else? Didn’t he have the resources to care for himself?Marion just walks out the door and leaves an invalid and her husband when she is 65? If she was going to leave she would have done it in the 1960s.Patrick was too refined to go to Venice in August. He would have waited until the fall.40 years is a long, long time...particularly those 40 years. Patrick would have bought a house in Venice when he was released from prison and Tom would have joined him in 1960 but apparently, we still have to endure tragic queer love stories that end unhappily.The prose is slow in this novel, but thoughtful and at times even lyrical. Let’s hope the film does a better job with all the loose ends that the author didn’t address.

Heart wrenching story of love and the times. Can’t wait to see this as a movie. Highly recommend.

Like many others, I bought this book because Harry Styles will star in the movie adaptation. It is so well written. You want to get know the characters and know how they end up. You will feel all the feelings going through this story, and you won’t want to put it down.

I brought this book after hearing that it may be being made into a film starring Harry Styles. I am so glad that I read this! It shows the real struggles behind homophobia and how this may affect someone who relates to these issues. This is definitely worth a read, so much so that I will probably be reading it again!
