Nowhere on the actual pencil does it say made in Japan. But on the back of the box, it simply reads, Japan. The great quality of these pencils would indicate that they are made in Japan.

Does this pencil say "made by elaborate process" on the other side?

Yes. I have 4 different types of Mitsubishi pencils, and this is the only one that has that label.
