Now in paperback! How do we hear the Spiritโs voice in Scripture? Once we have done responsible exegesis, how may we expect the Spirit to apply the text to our lives and communities? In Spirit Hermeneutics biblical scholar Craig Keener addresses these questions, carefully articulating how the experience of the Spirit that empowered the church on the day of Pentecost canโand shouldโdynamically shape our reading of Scripture today. Keener considers what Spirit-guided interpretation means, explores implications of an epistemology of Word and Spirit for biblical hermeneutics, and shows how Scripture itself models an experiential appropriation of its message. Bridging the Word-Spirit gap between academic and experiential Christian approaches, Keenerโs Spirit Hermeneutics narrates a way of reading the Bible that is faithful both to the Spirit-inspired biblical text and to the experience of the Spirit among believers. Review: A Groundbreaking Approach to Biblical Interpretation - A Groundbreaking Approach to Biblical Interpretation In Spirit Hermeneutics, Craig S. Keener offers an innovative framework for reading the Bibleโa method that brings the dynamic work of the Holy Spirit into the interpretative process. Keener, known for his rigorous scholarship, challenges traditional hermeneutical approaches by arguing that an experiential understanding of the Spirit is not only valid but essential for fully grasping Scripture. Integrating Experience with Scholarship Keener deftly navigates between academic rigor and the lived experience of faith. He contends that too often, biblical interpretation has sidelined the experiential dimension of the Spirit. By drawing on historical, theological, and experiential evidence, Keener proposes a balanced approach that enriches our reading of biblical texts. This synthesis of scholarly exegesis and Pentecostal experience provides readers with a fresh perspective on how the Spirit can guide interpretation. Methodological Innovation One of the bookโs key strengths is its detailed outline of a new hermeneutical method. Keener not only critiques traditional approaches but also offers practical steps for incorporating spiritual experience into biblical study. His framework encourages readersโwhether pastors, scholars, or laypeopleโto view Scripture as a living document, continuously speaking to contemporary issues through the lens of spiritual discernment. Bridging Denominational Divides Spirit Hermeneutics is particularly noteworthy for its potential to bridge gaps between different Christian traditions. While rooted in Pentecostal experience, Keenerโs approach is accessible to anyone interested in a more holistic reading of the Bible. His work invites dialogue between scholars and practitioners, fostering a richer, more inclusive conversation about the nature of biblical interpretation. Final Thoughts Craig S. Keenerโs Spirit Hermeneutics is a thought-provoking and refreshing contribution to modern biblical studies. It challenges readers to reconsider the role of the Holy Spirit in shaping our understanding of Scripture and provides a well-researched, innovative framework that enriches both academic and devotional reading. Whether youโre a seasoned scholar or new to biblical studies, this book offers profound insights that will inspire you to explore Scripture with renewed passion and depth. Review: Informative - This book gives a compelling argument for reading the scriptures from different perspectives such as experiential, christocentric analytical, and eschatological. The writing is explicit with examples.

A beautifully written book
I enjoyed this book on multiple levels. 1. I appreciated the insights into Scripture hermeneutics in general. 2. The way it was intertwined with Charismatic thread without making it the main point, but a beautiful lens to truly see Scripture. 3. I felt it was written in a way a layman could grasp with just a little effort all that was written. I highly recommend this to anyone.

Great material, needs more editing
The concepts and perspective on hermeneutics and the impact of the global pentecostal/charismatic/renewal community are insightful and important, and I enjoyed reflecting on them. I did not enjoy the verbosity that made reading it laborious at times, like running up a sand dune. Dr. Yong's preface mentioned how this volume exceeded the length guidelines. It is too bad he didn't enforce those guidelines. This would have been a much better book. Unfortunately, at times it reads like a first draft. That said, I happily recommend it to readers interested in understanding how deliberately engaging with the Spirit in Bible interpretation works.

A must read for Pentecostals, as well
Truly enjoying this book. For a Pentecostal it is both reassuring, as well as a healthy correction to some of our excesses. Being a 4th generation Pentecostal, who has embraced Reformed Theology, I still see great strengths in Pentecostal traditions. That being said, I also recognize many errors and excesses, many of which are dealt with masterfully in this volume. This is my first Keener read, and I will be purchasing his other books for further reading, to be sure.
