Large Capacity and Perfect Results Every Time
I’m very impressed with this 16-cup rice cooker. It’s perfect for preparing large meals for family gatherings or meal prep. The rice comes out fluffy and evenly cooked every time, and the large capacity makes it easy to cook enough for everyone at once. The controls are simple to use, and the keep-warm function keeps the rice fresh until it’s ready to serve. It’s easy to clean, well made, and offers excellent value for the price. I’m very happy with this purchase and would highly recommend it.

Great Until It Wasn't...
This was like a lifesaver, making dinner so much easier to cook for about a month. Then my house filled up with the smell of burned plastic, I traced it back to the kitchen but could not find what was causing the smell. When I did, I saw that the control panel had melted, to my absolute horror. For the first time ever the rice had also burned without automatically going to the warm setting. I took the cooking dish out and used a wooden spoon to try to turn the rice cooker off but it wouldn't turn off. I made a video of what happened because I feel like I have an obligation to say something but this was a great rice cooker I thought I'd have forever before this occurred.

BLACK+DECKER 16-Cup Rice Cooker – A Messy, Frustrating Experience (Not Worth the Savings)
I was replacing a Cuisinart rice cooker (my second over the years) and thought I’d try something more budget-friendly. On paper, this BLACK+DECKER model looked comparable. In reality… not even close. Overall, this was one of the most frustrating kitchen appliance experiences I’ve had in a while. Let’s start with the instructions—somehow both overly complicated and unhelpful at the same time. Between two adults with plenty of cooking experience, we couldn’t make sense of them and had to turn to a video just to get going. Then came the cooking process… which seemed to go on forever. And ever. And ever. We’re talking nearly an hour for rice, during which time the cooker also decided to spew water all over my counter. At one point I found myself partially covering it with a dishtowel (not exactly in the instruction manual…), just trying to contain the mess. When I finally checked the rice—well after dinner should have been served—it was still a soupy, gloppy situation. Not exactly the goal. Pros: Lower price point Large capacity Cons: Confusing, poorly written instructions Extremely long cook time Water overflow and counter mess Inconsistent, undercooked results Not comparable to more reliable brands Best for: Honestly, I’d have a hard time recommending this—especially if you’ve used a more dependable rice cooker before. Bottom line: This one is already headed back. I’ve reordered my trusty Cuisinart, which may cost more but actually cooks rice (and doesn’t redecorate my kitchen in the process). Save yourself the frustration and skip this one.

Works great and makes a good amount
I like the larger size of this rice cooker for making enough for a family or for leftovers for less people. Heats up quickly and cooks the rice great. Made of light weight material making it easy to move around. Its not to big to take up a ton of space. If you're a fan of rice like I am this is a great cooker for you. It makes white rice from the bag or yellow rice from the box all the same and all good.

A solid, decent rice cooker option
I purchased this to replace one I had used (of a different brand) for nearly 20 years. The finish on the bottom of the metal bowl the rice cooks in had begun to scratch and come off, so I felt for health reasons it was probably time to replace it. I loved the simplicity of my previous rice cooker, and looked for something similar. Overall, I have been happy with this purchase so far. I’ll detail a few of the pros and cons below, but I think I would purchase this again. Pros: *The rice is consistently cooked perfectly, and tastes great. This is the most important thing, and why I would purchase again. *The warming feature works well, and indeed keeps rice warm once it finishes cooking. So far, our rice has not dried out with this feature, but we also haven’t had to keep it warm for more than an hour or so. *It is fairly easy to use. The method of water measurement has been a little different from my previous cooker, which is taking a little adjustment (I have to consult the manual each time I use it to remind me of ratios), but once I get my ratios it only takes a few seconds to get rice cooking. I wish they would print ratios on a sticker and put it on the cooker, so I didn’t have to consult the book each time, but I’ll learn the ratios eventually. Cons: *This may just be the difference of buying something 20 years ago vs today, but the quality is noticeably less than my previous cooker. The plastic and metal on everything feels thinner — not as substantial. The serving paddle feels like a thinner plastic — only slightly thicker than what I would consider disposable plastic serve ware. It doesn’t impact the results with the rice, but I do wonder if it will impact durability and longevity. I do not expect that this cooker will last 20 years like my previous one. *This may be a silly gripe, but the serving paddle on my previous rice cooker was designed to rest in the handle on the side of the cooker, and I didn’t realize how much I liked that feature until I didn’t have it. It was great for serving to a crowd without having to set the paddle on the counter. While I technically can put the paddle in the handle of this one, it is clearly not designed to rest there, and one would have to touch the part of the paddle that comes in contact with food to remove it from the handle. Not ideal in a crowd. But, it still works. Like I said, overall I’m happy with the purchase, and if you’re looking for a solid rice cooker, this is a good option. I’m just putting the things in this review that I would have liked to note before ordering.

well worth it
this rice cooker is great. we use it at least 3 days a week either making rice, or steaming vegetables. it is so easy to steam broccoli with this thing. just add water to the pan, fill the basket with veggies and hit the start lever. the rice always comes out perfect too. we have made long grain, jasmine, and basmati rice in it and it is always good.

So Far, So Good
This rice cooker is just what I needed to cook soups, etc. with my solar battery. I have browned onions and meat in it and this cooker did a very good job. I also made a stew type dish in it, and meat sauce and spaghetti which all turned out well. I would recommend being sure all ingredients are close to or at room temps because this cooker only goes up to 500 watts which makes it a little slow to get up to speed. I think this item was a great buy. Will update if I change my mind. UPDATE: I purchased the 6 cup model of this rice cooker because I liked the bigger one so much. Needed a smaller one for our RV that I could just leave in it and not have to move it back and forth from home base to RV. I like it so well that I keep this smaller rice cooker at home and took my old smaller cooker to the RV. I have read reviews on several brands of these types of rice cookers. I own and use 3 different brands of these. The biggest complaint I have read about them is the rice browning in the bottom of the pan. To avoid this, keep an eye on the cooker and when the water seems it is about all cooked away or just a little in the bottom of the pan, just unplug the cooker and let it sit for a few minutes with its lid on. The rice will continue to cook and absorb the rest of the liquid. No more browning. In my experience these types of cookers are not start and walk away. Maybe the $150 and up models can be left indefinitely, but you pay for for that convenience. I have been quite happy with my cheaper rice cookers. UPDATE #2: I just purchased my third Black an Decker rice cooker. Our son had a rice cooker that bit the dust, so on his last visit home I gave him my B&D 6 cup cooker. I thought about reordering another brand of 6 cup cooker from another company, but decided to just replace my 6 cup rice cooker with another B&D model. I like the way they work, the steamer is a plus, and the price is right. What's not to like?
