How best to apply to existing windows - i.e. the surface is vertical? Would another product work better?

It is pretty thick so it won't run. Is easy to apply to vertical windows/product. If you make a mistake it also wipes off pretty easy as long as it hasn't dried for along time. I usually let the lead set up overnight before I start painting around. Hope this helps

will the leading stick to wood?

I used it on glass. I don't know if it would adhere to wood. It can be cut off glass so whether or not it would stay put on wood is unknown to me.
