It is one of the most powerful units on the market - I rarely have to go above 50 out of 100 in setting power. It has customizable settings, but I like using the preset programs which are very effective. I mostly use it for EMS purposes and building muscles (like abdomen and arms). I have compared it to other similarly-looking machines as I own many brands, and the Med-Fit is the best. I like the batteries because rechargeables, like cell phones, eventually have battery issues. I use AA rechargeable batteries and expect this unit to last many years.
