White Lightning Clean Ride Self-Cleaning Wax Chain Lubricant 4 fl oz

I had previously used Boseheild T9 (Parafin) and Finish line Dry (Teflon) Both are good lubricants, but neither one was actually dry. Both are SUPPOSED to be dry, but neither one ever dried for me no matter how thin I applied it. So both collected tons of road grit and grime, which in my opinion is the most damaging thing for a drive train. It gets into the chain links and acts like sandpaper. But White Lightning actually goes on dry. And pretty quickly too. It dries to the touch in minutes, though from what I understand it needs a few hours to really dry thoroughly and set properly. When riding in dirty conditions with gravely road grit that used to clump onto my chain and cassette like crazy, my chain is now clean to the touch. There is no accumulation of grime on the chain so nothing between the links that is grinding away and wearing everything out. A thin coating of the wax still appears on the rollers so it's gliding smoothly over the crank. And the wax is visible between the links as well. The product works just like it's supposed to. It falls off the chain when it accumulates grit. The grit sticks to the wax and the wax sluffs off, taking the grit with it. For that reason this does not last for 500 miles between applications. It lasts for 50-100 miles depending on road conditions. It wears off faster when its' wet out, not because of water washing the wax off, but because wet road grit is stickier so it attaches to the chain easier, causing more of the coating to sluff off to get rid of the dirt. I don't ride in full rain (not on purpose anyway). I would NOT recommend this for a bike that you regularly ride in rain. I find I need to do a quick reapplication of this after a ride on wet roads shortly AFTER a rain. It lasts for several rides in dry conditions. The first application needs to be a clean drive train. But no matter how well you think you've cleaned it, there will probably be residual lubricant from your previous lube on things. The White Lightning will take that off quickly, but it will mean you have to reapply it after 10-20 miles the first time you use it. Then it should last for 100 miles in dry conditions, 50 miles in damp conditions, and a single ride in totally wet conditions. I'm guessing the larger bottle is good for 25-30 applications. So it'll last a while. The first application should be a total clean job where you take everything apart and clean it thoroughly. Most subsequent applications can be done by just adding 1 drop to each roller on the chain as you back pedal it 1 cycle around, then letting it dry for the evening before riding the next day. You don't have to do a full cleaning every time.

I've basically used all the major chain lubes on my MTB over the years from Finish Line to Muc Off and everything in between. Nothing has worked as well as this! I was very skeptical about this "self cleaning" claim but after not being very impressed with any of the myriad of lubes I've used before, I had nothing to lose trying this one out too. I can tell you the self cleaning claim actually works. I place one drop per link and just let it dry. I do not wipe it off. Why would you? Yes, when it first dries on the chain it looks like you have white caked on wax on your chain but that's the beauty of this product. As you ride and accumulate sand and dirt on the chain, that waxy stuff starts to fly off the chain, taking the dirt and sand with it! I ride in South Florida so my chains were always very gritty after any ride which forced me to want to clean my chain A LOT. I just hated that gritty sound and feeling on the chain, know it was wearing a lot on my cassette and chain ring. After using this product, I notice my chain still looks clean even after several rides. I'm sold. My recommendation is to NOT wipe it off but just let it dry on. The more waxy stuff on it, the better self cleaning action you'll get. I used to clean my chain weekly, not it's basically once a month. Also, I recommend one drop per link as you move the chain over the cassette. For one, it cuts down on how much this drops to the floor (this thing stains). Second, your bottle will last a lot longer using one drop at a time. The liquid is not thick at all so if you just do the "spray" method where you just spray a stream of this stuff over a month chain the bottle is going to empty out quickly. It's just a huge waste since one drop per link is all you need. Make sure to shake the bottle before use too. You'll notice the wax can harden and stick to the bottom of the bottle and you want all that wax on the chain.

I have switched to this style lubricant for all my road bikes and it works great.

I used to wax my chains using a crockpot, paraffin blocks, and some Teflon powder until I tried the Clean Ride stuff. I had read about this on bike forums, but figured it was the same as the rather tedious cleaning of chain with mineral spirits and/or sonicator plus Simple Green and isopropanol. Yes, they both are wax based, with Clean Ride being wax suspended in heptane (pretty sure). Clean Ride still calls for a solid cleaning of chain before initial application, but after that it is just reapplied, resuspending and washing off the dirt on the chain. Certainly much easier than the clean and wax method u was previously using. Not a “green” solution, of course. Like paraffin, Clean Ride will not give you a perfectly clean chain. At least not if you are riding a good distance. I can still get chain marks in my legs and hands from either method. But they are both much less messy than oil based lubricants. I tend to wipe the chain down before reapplying Clean Ride as it helps in removing a good portion of the accumulated gunk on the chain. And rain will wash it out quickly, so reapplication is required after rain. Since I ride 20-40 miles per workday, I end up applying Clean Ride about once a week. I first remove the chain using a quick link and give it a good wipe down with a rag, sometimes dampened with mineral spirits, then unroll that’s chain onto an old portion of my rotting deck rail (soon to be replaced) and apply using the initial small dispenser bottle I refill with the big jug reviewed here. The dispenser bottle is key (and ample mixing), as it lets you apply it drip by drip to each link. Or as close to drip by drip as patience allows. Then let the carrier evaporate or wipe it down with a rag once more and repeat (if OCD). You can apply it while on the bike, but I find it makes a bit of a mess, dribbling onto my wheels and tires if the angle is off. As far as refilling the dispenser bottles, I use a small funnel after prying off the dispenser cap (which can be tricky as you don’t want to damage it). Shake the heck out of the big jug and carefully pour in the suspended lube. It’s not perfect as my chains do seem to get noisy earlier than the old paraffin method, which is usually my signal of when a chain is in need of reapplication or swapping out with a pre-lubed chain. I find keeping a few chains ready to go works for when I am lazy or it is raining outside. As noted, this is not my go to chain lube. Yes, it is a bit tedious to have to reapply, but it beats oil lubes and their mess.

I've tried many lubes and this is my favorite. There are many "clean" lubes out there, but this is the only one that seems to work. Easy application, shake, apply to chain while spinning in reverse, continue spinning in reverse for it to work into the chain, wipe off excess. Wiping off excess also cleans any dirt on the chain. The bike is ready to ride the next day. Because this is a dry lube, the chain collects very little dirt, if any. Hence, the chain/cassette/chain rings stay very clean. Your hands/clothing will not get greasy on the occasion that you need to touch the chain. The down side is that it does not last as long as wet lubes, especially in the wet weather. I typically get 50-60 miles per application, which for me means application after every ride. I would give it 5 stars if it lasted a bit longer. Other lubes that I used include teflon dry, synthetic wet, and pro gold. Teflon dry was similar to the wax, but not as clean. Synthetic wet is simply an ordinary oil for biking and although it lasted the longest was the messiest. The pro gold lasts longer, but not as clean as the wax.

Why I changed Chain Lubricants? I was using Rock N Roll Extreme lubricant for trail riding, but it is as the product says “its extremely dry,” meaning very little lubricant is put onto the chain. Just in case you do not know, the white stuff in the bottle is the wax lubricant, and the other liquid is the agent that mixes with the wax that dispenses the wax onto the chain. As you know you need lubricant to keep the metal parts moving freely with as little friction as possible. This keeps the components in good shape and hopefully lasting for years of use. Since I was used Rock N Roll Extreme, I’ve snapped three chains in the last six months. In all fairness, I have been using Rock N Roll Extreme for about two years with no problem. It could have been bad luck with chains however; chains are more expensive than chain lube so I decided to try White Lightning Clean Ride and so far so good. Conditions I Ride In: Unfortunately the conditions I ride in are mixed dirt with lots of sand everywhere... As you can imagine sand is a pain in the neck to ride in when dry, and it clumps when wet, and when you get sand in your drive-train, it acts like sandpaper grinding away at your expensive components. What Have I Used? I not only have used Rock N Roll Extreme, I’ve also used Finish Line Dry, which is a close second to White Lightning Clean Ride only because it has a little less wax. Last, I tried Tri Flow, which is awesome, but Tri Flow collects dirt and sand like a magnet so I do not recommend for trail riding, unless its wet conditions. What I like about White Lightning Clean Ride? 1. There is way more wax lubricant in the bottle compared to other brands. 2. It does not collect and build up dirt or sand. Literally, as the product says it drops off excess wax when it becomes dirty, thus keeping your drive-train cleaner. Last, I also spray on Muc-Off Bike Protect (which has PTFE a.k.a. Teflon) as a pre-lubricant on the drive-train and because it serves as a water displacement. Using on Muc-Off Bike Protect seems to work well in conjunction with White Lightning Clean Ride. Hence, my recommendation is to use White Lightning Clean Ride even if you do not use anything for a pre-lubricant/water displacement.

Always been pretty happy with this variety of WL. I ride on surface streets and paved bike paths, and never ride in wet conditions so this is the best variety for me. I like that it's not a greasy/dirty lube if you get it on your skin. Is it the best lube? I don't know. I've always been curious about paraffin wax, but have never made the effort to try it.

I used to rent bikes on a Gulf of Mexico beach. The chains would rust rapidly. This wax lube not only prevented rust but would shed sand and even revive siezed chains. I have been using it for 25 years. Ideally you start with a fully degreased chain. New chains should be degreased too. You can squirt it all over a diirty rustly chain though.

Perfect for easy maintenance with benefits of wax. Other wax options are tedious and require chain removal. This is perfect option if you ride in dry conditions and are sensible enough to follow the instructions. Recoat every few hundred km and it will be fine on your chain. It is not a apply once and forget about it solution. Not ideal for the wet/dirt conditions, but doesn't profess to either! Those that don’t like it didn't read the instructions. Excellent support from velogear as bottle had spilt in transit.

Use it all the time does a nice job

I'm one of these people who keeps their bike immaculate. If I'm going to spend close on £1k on a bike, then it's going to stay clean! Keeping the drivetrain clean was always a pain. I'd be out with brushes, WD40, degreaser, soapy water etc after every ride, then re-lube with regular (but decent!) bike oil. Just a couple of short rides later and it would all be black and grimey again. I saw this stuff, read the reviews, and had to give it a go. It's a wax based lubricant in a paraffin (or similar) suspension, so it drips onto your chain easily (no real waste if you're careful) and then the liquid evaporates and leaves a nice wax lube over everything - mostly clear, only shows as white in some areas where its thicker. It feels smoother to ride than ever before - quieter and shifting beautifully. But the best bit, you get home and the drivetrain still looks clean!It still picks up a bit of dirt of course, but no-where near as much as when using regular (sticky) oil. You do have to re-apply quite often - in my case i've found every 50 miles or so, but you don't need much and it's easily applied so it's no problem. This is my 2nd order of this stuff - 4oz bottle the first time and now 8oz - clearly i'm pleased with it!
