This is a re-edit of the original rules into a single book, arranged and presented much better than my old ones were. I don't notice any major changes in the content itself, just clarification and deletion of irrelevant items (like suggesting you play a different game if you want a wilderness adventure.) Nice and legible 2 tone tables, beautiful artwork, all printed on demand in a perfect bound book with slick b/w cover art that calls back the old days when this WAS Dungeons and Dragons. If you want to go truly Old School, this is better and way cheaper than tracking down those old books. Even if you're a collector, this is a better book for gameplay. Easy to grasp and highly customizable. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An excellent single-book OSR ruleset *by C***S on January 26, 2026* White Box has long been a favorite of mine, and I was delighted to see how inexpensive it was to get a hardcopy here. I've experimented with other OSR clones (and with other game systems) for years. Many do a nice job modernizing, without completely changing, the original games. But most require some knowledge of those old rules. None are beginner friendly, and many share one of the old games biggest problems-- too many books needed for a single session. White Box is a great standalone book. Just grab a generic adventure and go. Its presentation and organization is good for grognards and would be easy for younger players to learn as well. The only thing I'd change in a future edition: pick an armor class mechanic and stick with it. Older players will be fine with seeing both the ascending and descending methods offered. But brand new players might be confused by it. It just puts a lot of unneeded numbers on the creature profiles.
